Date Week: Candlelight White

Feb 9, 2010

The traditional going-out attire for the modern woman is the little black dress.  But while this wardrobe staple is perfect for cocktail parties, professional events and cold-weather weddings, black doesn’t really scream, “Romance.”  If you really want to feel special on Cupid’s big day and set your man’s heart aflutter, you should try something decidedly lighter.

Since our restaurant of choice for Date Week: Day One has a romantic, candle lit vibe going for it, I thought we might try an outfit that utilizes soft neutrals and shine to create a look that is both sexy and elegant.

A.B.S Bow Neck Coat (Bluefly, $165)

Alice + Olivia Casey Dress (Nordstrom, $495)

For this look, I decided to match the coat with the dress.  Vintage fashions often came with matching or coordinating coats to create a complete look, and it’s just a shame that we don’t do that anymore.  Here we have a soft peachy, gold pailette dress with an ivory overcoat.

Nina Ulexa Sandal (Zappos, $89)

I chose a simple sandal in the same peachy gold because I wanted something in the same color palette.  If you’re afraid of your tootsies getting cold in this frigid weather, you could easily add a closed toed or peep toed nude pump.  Because no one wants to get into bed with someone who has icy cold feet.

Pearl Jewel Box Earrings (J.Crew, $68)

Luxe Cocktail Bracelet (J.Crew, $98)

Nothing says elegant lady about town like pearls, but these pieces offer just a hint of vintage spice to keep things interesting.  The pearls also provide a soft contrast to the shiny, pailette encrusted dress.

Now that we have the outerwear, the dress and the accessories covered, we should move on to the underpinnings.  What?  It’s Valentine’s Day.

Stella McCartney Whistling Lingerie Set ($195 & $90)

Because the bra is an underwire, it will give you the support you need to actually fill out the dress.  Unlike a jersey, silk or chiffon dress, a pailette dress is heavy enough to conceal the texture of a lace bra.  And lastly, unlike some more adventurous underpinnings, these are actually comfortable enough to wear the entire night.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
