Faux Pas: Camouflaging Your Sins

Feb 4, 2010

At the end of the day, I look forward to the comfort of a home-cooked meal and a pair of flannel pajamas.  But while I love my pajama pants as much as the next red-blooded American woman, I would never leave the apartment while wearing them.

Over the last two decades the threshold between the bedroom and the school/grocery store/casual Friday office has all but disappeared.  A large number of women (and men) feel very comfortable heading out of the house in their PJs.  But wearing pajamas in public is categorically unacceptable, and places the wearer in clear violation of the natural order, the social contract, and the laws of fashion.  However, one clever inventor has come up with a way to conceal your sartorial sins and remain comfortable.

Enter Pajama Jeans, the “Pajamas you live in, Jeans you sleep in.”

(Yes, you read that right.)

On the one hand, I think that the creator of the Pajama Jeans is brilliant.  Americans buy Uggs, Snuggies, Slankets and Crocs, so pants that fit like PJs but are disguised as denim are bound to catch on with the public.  This guy is going to make a fortune.

Then again, he’s going to make a fortune reinforcing everything that I believe is wrong with our society.

While the woman in the video may not look like a faux pas, what are the odds that your average Pajama Jeans wearer is going to leave the house that coiffed and pressed?  If you don’t have the energy to put on real pants, where will you muster the will to shower, do your hair and put on a full face of makeup?

Even though I would not wear these jeans and would discourage you from wearing them, I must admit that Pajama Jeans are a preferred alternative to the hideous fashions that populate our nation’s airports in the name of comfort.  I’d rather see my fellow passengers wearing trompe l’oeil denim than Juicy velour.

Thus, I am conceding that if you choose to wear Pajama Jeans on your long flight, I will not judge you as long as you wear them with normal shoes and a clean, ironed shirt. But just remember that replacing real pajamas with pajamas designed to look like jeans is not the same as being appropriately dressed.  It is simply a single, but important step up from this.

If you truly believe outward appearance means nothing than you should not be wasting your time on a fashion blog.

I do not live a shallow existence. I work for Congress so that I can help people. I attend church, I volunteer, I give to charity. I also happen to like fashion and style and care about my appearance.

I do not have low self esteem. I do, however, believe that there is no excuse for wearing pajamas out of the house. Please don’t comment on this blog and judge my internal values because you do not know me. This blog is about the external but it does not assert that the external is the most important thing.

Denim has now moved into the realm of ridiculous. Understandably ridiculous, but ridiculous none the less.

Oh my, it’s like those slip on skinny jeans for moms…

I’m starting to see teens (and guys in their early twenties) in malls wearing pajama pants, as in plaid, ducks, cupcake printed flannel pants, and sweat shirts. What is wrong with their parents?

I wish more people will realize that sweats are not clothes and all clothes can be pretty comfortable if they fit properly. If these women find real pants uncomfortable it’s probably because they’re wearing them too tight.

You believe that not putting on a full face of make up and doing your hair is what’s wrong with society?!?!?! Let people be comfortable. People like you are why girls have such low self esteem nowadays, I just hope to god that my little sister can shrug off the people like you in the world. Outward appearance means nothing, I hope all the material possessions in your life make you happy and veil how shallow your existence really is.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
