Belle's SAG Awards Favorites

Jan 25, 2010

Every year, the Screen Actors Guild hosts they awards show in between the Golden Globes and the Oscar’s.  For most actresses, this is the opportunity to wear the “other dress.”  You know, when your deciding between two dresses and one makes a trip to the ball and the other goes back in the closet for another occasion.  Thus, the SAG awards aren’t usually known for their fashion but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few diamonds in the satin and chiffon rough.

Diane Kruger in Jason Wu.

While the mustard color is reminiscent of the Michelle Williams Vera Wang gown at the 2006 Oscar’s, the style is pure Old Hollywood glamour.  I love the draping and delicate ruching on the bodice.  I’m also a sucker for a train.  And tying the hole look together are a pair of fabulous (vintage?) gold disc earrings with rubies.

Carey Mulligan in Lanvin.

You may recall that I was iffy on Carey Mulligan’s Golden Globe’s dress, but I adore this red strapless gown with mermaid hem.  I like the bustling and draping in the front and back.  A friend commented that she shouldn’t have worn a dress that added volume to the hips, but it didn’t really bother me.  Besides, how many years does a 24-year-old have before accentuating the hips is a big no-no?  Take advantage of it while you can.

Kate Hudson in Emilio Pucci.

If you have a small bust or your not comfortable showing off your chest, a high-neck backless dress is the perfect way to add drama.  Here, Hudson pairs a sparkling white gown with $1.75 million in Cartier jewels to create an elegant look that is the polar opposite of her structured Globes gown.  Clearly, the money that she has been spending on Rachel Zoe’s services is well spent.  Wonder if she’ll wear white to the Oscar’s and go three for three?

Anna Kendrick in Alberta Ferreti.

I love the bright purple hue of Kendrick’s tiered and pleated gown.  I also prefer the peaked, structured strapless to the standard straight across neckline, and I much prefer this gown to her ruffly, overwhelming Globes gown.  But no matter what she is wearing, this child seriously needs a new hairstyle.  If I see one more side part, updo with swept bangs, I may crack.

And the worst dressed of the night was…

Anna Paquin in some tattoo printed nightmare.

Another ugly deep-V dress and a pair of heavy, caged sandals.  The Kiwi actress really needs to either a) hire a new stylist or b) call the people at Oscar de la Renta and beg for one of their elegant gowns.  Because this is getting ridiculous.

I see the last dress, and I think "Ed Hardy."

I really like Anna Paquin’s dress; the only problem (you read that right) is that it’s not formal enough for the occasion.

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
