Ask Belle: Wider is Better

Jan 15, 2010

Belle,

I have terrible under eye circles and after a few days back in session, I look like death.  Can you give me some tips on how to hide them?

Looking rested is certainly a challenge when you work on Capitol Hill, but luckily, under eye circles are easily concealed if you know what you are doing.  I’ve written before about the best way to conceal under eye darkness and I’ve also recommended the new duo concealer by Boing to get the job done.  But recently, I discovered that the key to covering up evidence of your exhaustion might be the brush you use.

Recently, I decided to upgrade my thin MAC concealer brush for a Sephora brush with a wider brush head.  And what a difference a few extra millimeters makes.

Having extra surface area makes it possible to apply under-eye concealer in one sweep instead of seven.  This makes it possible to apply the concealer more evenly and use less concealer.  And using less looks more natural and less cakey.

So no matter what kind of concealer you prefer to hide the evidence of too many nights spent waiting around for votes, try using a wider brush to get better coverage.

Love this brush – it’s the best thing for covering up those big dark circles. I just dab it with a tiny bit of my Bare Escentuals loose powder – way easier than the liquid concealer I used to use, and more gentle too.

Benefit’s Erase Paste is another awesome undereye concealer. I use a combination of Erase Paste and Boing in the morning (set with Bare Minerals.) I have two Bare Minerals maximum concealer brushes. One for Erase Paste and Boing application, the other for dabbing powder. And I keep an Eye Bright stick in my purse for post-work/pre-happy hour touch ups. Recently, my CoS even commented on how less stressed and well-rested I work. Oh how I wish that were the truth…

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
