NYC Fashion in Black and White

Jan 7, 2010

Looking at vintage photographs of eras goneby always makes me a little bit sad.  When did people stop caring about their appearance?  I think at some point during the last century most Americans decided that since they would never look like Cary Grant or Grace Kelly there was no reason to keep trying.  It was at that point that they traded their dresses and suits for Juicy velour and t-shirts.  It’s tragic really.

The following photos are courtesy of LIFE magazine and the website BryanBoy.  You’ll notice that there isn’t a pair of Uggs or a Vera Bradley handbag anywhere.

Can I have the gown in the window? Please?

I think I need to start bringing back hats for daily wear.  Sadly, my round face looks bad when I wear a hat.

Eight women, eight pairs of high heels.  You’d never see that today.

I love the suit, the hat, and the car.  Everything really, except for the poodles.

Coincidentally, I just blogged about my New Year’s resolutions a couple of days ago, one of which was to wear hats all day instead of just to and from work. I found an Emily Post quote from 1959 that inspired my goal: "It is impossible for a hatless woman to be chic." Indeed. So, you’ll see me in Rayburn at some point, wearing a hat and getting stares in response.

People back in the days pictured used to get dressed up for everything. I really do think hats add a lovely touch to a nice outfit (although the straw fedoras/newsboy/military style hats need to DIE NOW). However, I have a giant head and can’t find hats that fit. I really wish people could get back to dressing nicely. I’m not saying you need to wear heels to Target and the grocery store, but why on earth must you do it in penguin print pj pants? Can’t you at least put some jeans on?

The poodles are wonderful—-but so are the hats.

Totally support brining hats back into vogue! Wouldn’t it be amazing to see women dress like women again! 🙂

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]

The Find: My Best Workout Shorts

For eight years, I have worn the same workout shorts. Every year, an influencer tries to sell me new shorts. I order them. I try them on. They pale in comparison to the shorts I already own. I return them.
