I Bought Cognac Boots, Why You Should Too

Dec 23, 2009

This year, I decided that I wanted to buy a pair of flat boots for casual Fridays and weekends.  I had previously purchased a pair of beautiful grey suede boots on eBay, but they weren’t as versatile as I was hoping they would be.  After some consultation with Miss M, I decided to eschew the typical black for a pair of cognac boots.  I do not exaggerate when say that I (and half my co-workers) agree, these were the best purchase that I made all year.

My favorite way to wear my cognac boots is with a black pencil skirt and a black sweater.  That’s right, I wear black with brown and I do not feel bad about it.  They also look great with jeans and they have become my new favorite shoes.  So if you’re in the market for some new, chic boots, invest in Cognac.

Ciao Bella Tori Boot ($149)

These are the ones that I bought because of the rubber footbed which makes them more comfortable than leather soled shoes.

Corso Como Starlight ($198)

Steve Madden Iden Boot ($158)

Once you buy a pair of cognac boots, you will be surprised how many colors and outfits you can pair them with.  I’ve even started walking to work in mine every day because they are very comfy and keep my calves warm on my cold walk to work.  They are, in a word, perfection.

I’ve been debating black vs. cognac. Would you wear these into work on a non-casual day?

  2. Kim A. says:

I agree! I purchased a pair 2 years ago and never wore them really…packed them to come home to VA and love them with EVERYTHING! They’re my new jam;)

Pet peeve…the lovely ladies in my home state who feel it necessary to pair cognac boots, with a cognac leather jacket, with a cognac leather bag…and tell me i don’t ‘match’ when i don’t conform. Bless their hearts:)

  3. Michelle says:

Hi Belle! I have pretty skinny calves… do you have any recommendations for riding boots that won’t look like rainboots on me? How wide are the Ciao Bella boots you bought?

  4. Caroline says:

I bought the Ciao Bella boots in November and have worn them almost every day since! I love them and they’re looking better with the wear. I’m a boot fiend and these are by far the best I’ve ever owned.

Michelle, these are great because the ankles aren’t huge and they’re not wide in the calves looking from the front. From the side they’re a little wider than I’m used to, but it’s great for wearing jeans tucked in. Does that make sense?

  5. Sarah says:

I’m wearing a pair of cognac boots now! I finally broke them out (I bought them early summer) and am wearing them with a black outfit, it was either that or my black polka dot rain/snow boots. That’s what I love about them – they’re just not-brown enough that I feel completely comfortable wearing them with black clothing, but they would also match anything you would wear with straight brown boots.

  6. Emily says:

Mine broke Monday and I don’t know how I’m going to survive the rest of winter…seriously the best type of boots ever!

  7. Jillian says:

Got the Steven Madden boots for Christmas- they were beautiful but the sizes ran weird, at least for me. 9 was too small just in the toe box, but 9.5s were huge. The calves were also pretty big. I would definitely recommend trying them on (they have them at Nordstrom). Several friends have tried them and thought calves were too big too, but another friend has them and loves them. Still on the hunt for some cognac boots!!

  8. DC Celine says:

Absolutely agree – got my cognac Modern Vintage flat boots at the DSS last spring, and wear them constantly. With all colors styles. I only wish they made skinny jeans for preggers folks so I could tuck a pair in (assuming of course that there would be room for my "athletic" calves). great call

  9. Tortured boot gal says:

Thank you! This is huge for me. I have been wrestling with the question of what to do about boot color. I LOVE cognac, but have mostly black skirts. This solves the crisis.

  10. Meghan says:

I bought the Ciao Bella boots when they went on sale last week. I am wearing them for the first time today. These boots are magical. I've received 4 compliments on them and it's not yet Noon.

    Thanks for the fabulous recommendation!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
