Wearing a silk scarf is an art — how to tie it, how to style it. There are so many suggestions for how to wear it this fall to add a trendy bit of color and pattern to your looks. But I like a classic, and this outfit is exactly that.
I mean, look at this outfit. Classic pieces, a little something extra, a mix of textures and neutrals — it’s perfection. Let’s remake it.
The Trench. There is nothing like a trench coat. I remember buying my first one and wearing it with everything. Too hot, too cold, I didn’t care. I just loved it. It captured my essence as a twenty-something Hill staffer. I prefer a lighter tan to the darker khaki. I also have to have the gun flap on the shoulder or it’s not cool enough. Bonus points if there are epaulets.
Burberry is obviously the icon. J.Crew makes a fantastic coat in a softened khaki. For something under-$100, don’t miss this Avec Les Filles coat. Plus-size? Try Universal Standard.
Jeans. I received these Spanx Supersmooth 360 jeans as a gift. They’re light, comfortable, stretchy in the best way, and absolutely perfect if you chase kids, travel on planes, or need jeans that ride all day no better how your body changes shape. I bought another pair with my own cash. I may buy all the washes.
Scarf. The star of the show is the scarf. Ann Taylor has a very close cousin of the inspo scarf on its shelves. Looking for a different color palette? This Wolf & Badger scarf in earth tones is perfect for fall. This one from Etsy is just unbelievably gorgeous when draped.
Not sure how to style it? I like the way it’s tied in the inspo photo. I also found this photo on Pinterest of the scarf pulled through the button holes on the trench, very chic.
Top. This Aligne top is an awesome layering piece (currently on sale at Shopbop). It has a little flare at the hem. You can button it all the way up. You can wear it like a v-neck. It’s lightweight and the material is so soft. A great buy for fall.
Shoes & Bag. The texture of this woven bag adds a new dimension to the outfit. The lighter color is also unexpected and bold. I chose this J.W. Pei bag because the shape is cool and the details look more expensive than its sub-$150 price tag.
As for the shoes, I wanted something with a little verve to it. I have been obsessed with this chartreuse color for two years; my love for it has not faded at all. So when I spotted these M.Gemi Gia Loafers, I knew I had to add them to this outfit. The green in the shoes blends with the green in the scarf, but still offers a pop of color.
Accessories. Ray-Bans, of course. The earrings are a larger, puffier hoop for a bit more weight. They’re a basic earring shape with more impact. The inspo photo has a selection of several rings in it, so don’t hesitate to layer it up with your favorite pieces. This ring from Mejuri that mixes metals for a versatile look.
Styling. If I’m wearing a scarf tied around my neck, I want it to be seen. My hair is shorter, so I don’t have to pin it up — but I could. If yours is longer, try a low, loose ponytail and hide the elastic (video tutorial). As for the makeup, keep it simple and fresh with a rosy lip and cheek.
