Saw It On Social: Coleman Compound

Apr 2, 2026

I don’t remember how I originally found Melissa Coleman, known online as Mrs. Derm, but soon after following her, it felt like she was everywhere. The wife of a prominent New Orleans dermatologist, “Mel” as her followers call her, offered advice on the benefits of foreign sunscreen, which procedures worked and didn’t and which products worked and didn’t. I adored her.

When Coleman Compound, a high potency brightening cream, launched, I immediately bought a jar. Most of my influencer friends did. But was it worth the hype?

I have actually purchased Coleman Compound twice. The first time I bought it, I used it for a few weeks, but I could not get past the smell. It smells lightly of allium. It’s a faint scent, but I had just had a baby and odors were still making me queasy.

Earlier this year, I purchased it again. Grace Atwood and other influencer pals were saying nice things, and I thought I’d give it another try. So I ordered the Coleman Compound and Brightening Body Serum.

On first impression, the smell was still there, but it wasn’t unpleasant, just present. Fine. If I can tolerate lotions that smell like my Nana fell into a field of roses, I can handle this light scent.

For me, my results were a mixed bag. Was my skin brighter? Yes, much. Did my acne get worse? Yes, yes it did. So I gifted the product to my Mom.

My Mom’s skin is very different from mine. It’s more sensitive, a bit drier, no acne. Her results are better. She finds the cream brightens wonderfully. She still applies moisturizer with it, but thinks it’s worth the $140, and will purchase again.

As for the other product I purchased, the Body Brightening Serum. I adore it. I apply it at night before I lotion up. I feel a bit like a wet seal when I get into bed, but aging isn’t for the weak, and my skin needs the moisture. The serum is $105. I’ve had the bottle for two months, and I probably have another month of product before I need to restock. I will mention that you MUST wear sunscreen with this product. So I am going to have to be more diligent about applying body SPF this summer. But it’s a small price to pay for keeping dark spots on my arms at bay.

Bottom line, I like when dermatologists get into the skincare game. But, as they admit on the website, product performance does vary by skin type. If you have drier skin or sensitive skin, or if you struggle with dark spots, this is likely a product line that you will love. It just wasn’t the best fit for me.
