One of life’s enduring mysteries is where the socks go. You put 10 socks into the washing machine, and only 7 come out. The other three evaporate like my willpower when someone in the office buys donuts. So when I opened my sock drawer to discover that I was down to just two pairs, it was time to restock.
These Celersport socks are my favorite. They’re supportive, comfortable, and so soft and cozy. They’re my go to sock for sneakers and ankle boots. They’re so good, my husband accidentally put on a pair one day and decided to buy himself a few pairs.
Need a non-athletic, no-show sock? With ballet flats or loafers, I still need something to prevent blisters and chafing. These Peds socks are fantastic. They’re soft, don’t slip, and they’re designed to stay hidden. Sizes run 5-10 and 8-12. I’m a size 9 and bought the 8-12.

I am a convert to merino wool socks. They are nothing like the itchy rag wool socks of childhood. They wick sweat away from your feet, and even keep your feet warm if damp, yet my feet don’t get uncomfortably hot wearing them in the summer. Good ones have snug arches. And they miraculously don’t get stinky, so they are especially great for travel or when you might be taking your shoes off away from home. I have them in multiple styles, from ski socks, hiking socks, trouser socks, running socks, and even no-show styles. Brand does matter. I tried the merino socks from Costco and they pilled and didn’t fit snugly through the arch. I am devoted to Smartwool for my running / gym socks. Bombas makes great merino no show socks for sneakers (too high for my loafers or flats). I have some Smartwool socks (discontinued?) that work with loafers. Still looking for something low enough for ballet flats. Darn Tough socks can’t be beat for hiking socks, and they are made in the USA. I have too many pairs of ski socks (all Smartwool), but want to try the Darn Tough ones. Good socks are expensive, but happy feet are important. (My college-age daughter asked for Smartwool running socks and Darn Tough hiking socks for Christmas, they are that good.)
Two recs for keeping your socks:
-My parents safety pin theirs together (mom pins at the heel and dad at the toe). My only qualm here is that the washer and dryer and pull where the pin is, which can weaken the fabric of daintier socks.
-I use a large (18” x 18”) mesh bag to wash my socks. I tie it on the front of my hamper and throw it in with my whites to wash and dry. Then the only thing I have to do is match them as I put them away.
A friend recommended le bon shoppe boyfriend/girlfriend socks this year and I love them– they’re perfect for everyday wear (thick but not too thick) and I reach for them as soon as I wash them.
For athletic, I’m a fan of Feetures!
