Tuesday Outfit: A Late Summer WFH Look

Aug 15, 2023

I’m working from home, and I don’t love it.  I am the person who likes to get dressed for work, get in my car, commute in, grab a coffee, and go to the office.  I like being around people.  I like grabbing lunch. I like having a separate work space.  WFH is not for me, but I’m working for a firm in another state, so here I am.

WFH also means rethinking my wardrobe.  I don’t want to wear leggings everyday because I still want to dress for work.  There’s just something about the act of getting dressed for your job that gets you mentally ready for the day.  So when I spotted this look on Pinterest, I knew it was a good place to start.  Plus, you can make this look work whether you’re 30 or 60.

This easy look combines a simple color palette and functional, versatile pieces for an outfit that can go to work, brunch, the airplane, and any casual occasion you can think up.  Here’s how to recreate it with pieces you may already own.

The Pants // I’d like to take a minute to celebrate the Spanx On-the-Go white pants.  All of the pants in the collection feature a silver liner to keep them modest.  You can wear hot pink underwear with them and no one but you will know.  I love the wide legs I bought so much, I’m thinking about snapping up the slim-straight pants too.

One of the great things about the Spanx line is that it runs up to 3x, and comes in petite and tall inseams.  I bought the regular inseam in the wide legs and its a little cropped.  I’m thinking about trying the tall length and seeing if I like it better.

Also, the first time I wore them, my husband (who is usually doesn’t comment on my attire) told me they were “cool” and “a good look.”  I almost fainted.

The Shirt // Gauze shirts were my go-to look this summer.  Bright colors, white, black, I bought most of them from J.Crew.  This navy one, however, somehow escaped my grasp.  I’m fixing that today.  Also, if you want to tie the front perfectly, Jean is here to show you how.

Not into the gauze look?  I recommend a stripe.  Blue and white is classic, but how chic is this brown and white?

The Shoes // A t-strap sandal never goes out of style.  I chose these gold Lilly Pulitzer’s instead of the pewter from the inspo photo.  If you’re looking for something less expensive, these Dolce Vita sandals have a great metal detail, come in several colors, and cost under-$40.

Also, if you need a wider shoe, t-strap is a style that is a bit easier to find.  This pair from Vionic has more arch support and comes in medium or wide.

The Bag // I need to just break down and buy this System Tote from Cuyana. It comes with pouches and inserts so you can customize it to your needs.  I like that it looks more like a purse than a laptop bag, but can accommodate a 15-16″ laptop.  And bonus points for the fact that I can buy a wider strap and use it as a crossbody.  Plus, like all Cuyana bags the leather is gorgeous.

Accessories and Styling // This wide link chain necklace felt like the right move for me.  I like this option from Baublebar that gives you that chic look without the price.  Also, if you own a Dorsey tennis necklace or something similar, this is the perfect outfit to wear it with for that Cape Cod in summer look.

I chose not to add the bracelet stack because I hate to have anything on my wrists when I’m typing.  But, if this is your look, don’t miss this inexpensive coil bracelet that gives you a similar set of textures.

For the oversized sunnies, I like these Gucci shades that come in under-$300.  I own this pair to wear to weddings and other events where I might want a designer pair.  But I also love this <$25 AJ Morgan pair from Tuckernuck.

Lastly, I wanted a neutral lip with a little bit of color, so my shade of choice is always Gucci Call it A Day.  And if you’re going for that perfectly tousled loose wave, you’re going to need texturizer.

Many thanks for this! I too like to get dressed even when working from home and have been struggling with outfits this summer. And thanks for noting the system tote holds a larger laptop-did not realize that from the photos.

I’m slowly coming to terms with wide-leg pants. Tried on my first pair–ever–today, and wow, I did feel kinda cool. Gonna have to check out these Spanx options, I’ve been impressed with the quality of other items of clothing I’ve purchased from them thanks for your reccs in the past!

I have bought and returned that Cuyana bag – twice. I loved the shape and the concept, but it SO HEAVY, even without anything in it.

I like my system tote, but yes it is very heavy! I bought a skinny strap with it— I’d probably carry it more with the thick strap. I like the organization but I tend to go with my Cole Haan backpack more because it’s lighter.

I have the tote.t He concept is amazing but wow, it shows wear quickly. Last year when I was only going in 1-2 times per week the straps started showing wear in 6months. Their customer service is amazing so they replaced it but i go in almost everyday now so with the laptop the straps just look so worn. Such a great concept though.

Thank you for this! The Spanx pants look so well-made. Curious if they’re warm for summer? In steamy DC.

Shoe Week: One Last Summer Shoe

It’s been a fun week talking about shoes. A former co-worker texted me yesterday and asked what shoe I would buy, if I were only going to buy one shoe for summer. And, of course, I told her that I have two suggestions. Her response: “Typical.”

Shoe Week: A High Heel Alternative

Next month, I’m spending a week in Salt Lake for work. My ability to wear high heels went out with the pandemic, so what am I putting on my feet? These.
