The Weekly Edit: ‘Back to Work’ Must Haves

Jan 28, 2021

Being back in the office is a strange thing.  Being around people, getting dressed every day, adjusting to being in the office when you’re used to being home, it’s a lot.  But I have found a few things to make it easier.

Sonix iPhone Case // I was looking for a phone case that was neutral but not basic black or some other solid color.  I found this Sonix case in tortoise and knew it was the one.  It’s a grown up way to have a more-than-basic case.

Sonix cases are infused with antimicrobial chemicals to resist bacteria growth, and they are drop-tested at ten feet.  They make cases for iPhones and the Google pixel.  Have a Galaxy?  This tortoise case is very similar.

Rebecca Minkoff Apple Watch Band // My Apple Watch is an essential during the session.  It lets me check text messages without looking at my phone, and discretely read headlines as news breaks.

Finding good quality watch bands that look professional is tough, but I love this Rebecca Minkoff option.  It comes in yellow, white or rose-colored metal.  Kate Spade also makes a handful of watch bands, including this traditional one and this brown luggage leather band.  Lastly, I recommend this Michelle watch band in black if you have a black watch; it is so chic.

Urban Decay All Nighter Spray // Wearing my mask all day is an adjustment.  Wearing it with makeup on is miserable.  To make sure my makeup isn’t rubbed off by my mask (because I don’t wear it when I’m in my own office), I use this Urban Decay All Nighter Spray.

This spray locks your makeup in place and fights shine by controlling oil.  It’s lightweight, and you apply it by spraying it directly on top of your finished look.  Honestly, I can’t live without it.

Need a good primer to go with it?  This $8 primer gives your skin a powerless quality no other primer can match.

LOFT Blue Light Glasses // I swear by blue light glasses for combating eye fatigue.  If I don’t wear mine regularly, I get the worst headaches.  This grey tortoise pair from LOFT are the latest addition to my collection.  They have a simple shape and cool pattern that will look good on almost everyone.  I also own these clear glasses from 12 Hungry Bens, and these black frame glasses from Prive Riveaux.

L’Occitane Hand Cream // I wash my hands or Purell several time per day, and it is murder on my cuticles.  This rich hand cream from L’Occitane is keeping them soft and moisturized.  The three pack I linked is the best buy (because I go through it so quickly), but you can also buy an individual tube.  The single tubes make a great gift for interns, mentors, or whenever you need a small, but useful gift.  I like the Shea Butter and the Almond.

Bonus Must Have // A Great Standing Desk and Fatigue Mat // I cannot sit all day at my desk.  It is hell on my back.  So I like to switch to standing several times per day.  To turn my regular desk into a standing desk, I bought this standing desk converter from Amazon and a Gorilla Grip floor mat.  Being able to stand while I grind out emails or clean up my end-of-day to-do list is a game changer for me.

I swear by the All Nighter spray. In the Before Times, it made a huge difference in keeping my makeup from melting away over the course of a workday. I also have pretty breakout-prone skin and, if anything, it helps by controlling oil.

But the other day I went for a masked run after doing my makeup for Zoom, and to my great surprise it looked largely the same afterwards. (Not my intention – I just didn’t bother to wash my face beforehand.) Probably wouldn’t have gotten the same result in the summer, but still – highly recommend.

L’Occitane hand cream is the best! I have used every night for years, but now need several times a day. In my desk now.

  3. Blud says:

Regarding the Apple Watch, how did you decide what color to get when you picked the watch? That’s one thing that’s hard is the watch face metal will show so if you got a silver one but want to wear a gold band(or vice versa) I can imagine it might not look as nice. Unless the mixing metals thing isn’t a big deal to you of course.

    • Belle says:

I bought the rose gold; I do choose bands that coordinate or don’t have metal. It does limit you some, so just pick the one you like most. Or the one that goes with the bulk of your jewelry.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
