Tuesday Outfit: A Classic Office Outfit

Dec 22, 2020

My wardrobe for this legislative session is going to be simple.  Mostly black and white, interchangeable pieces, nothing that is uncomfortable or that I feel iffy about.  I want to get up in the morning and choose clothes, not stare at a closet of nothing to wear.

This look (found on Pinterest) is classic.  You could wear this today, next year, ten years from now, and it will still look great.  But the little details — a pushed up sleeve, a cool necklace, a modern nail color — are what make it feel fresh.

Coat // I pulled a basic trench coat from Ralph Lauren for this outfit.  It’s hooded and water resistant, so it’s perfect for a wet, mild-moderate winter.  Need wool?  This belted wrap coat from Cole Haan is incredibly elegant.

Want to go all out?  Burberry’s Islington trench is a true stunner.

Sweater // If you don’t own a black crewneck sweater, I highly recommend buying one.  You can layer it over leggings or work attire and it works flawlessly every time.  This cropped Italian wool sweater from Banana Republic is a great piece.  I also like this Club Monaco crewneck sweater.

Prefer cashmere?  This <$70 sweater from Bloomingdale’s is the way to go.  Need cotton?  Land’s End has you covered (also in plus).

Shirt // The only white shirt I buy for work is the Banana Republic Riley-fit shirt.  It is well-tailored, and the new, shorter length looks good both untucked and tucked.  Also in tall or petite.

Pants // A charcoal grey pant is an easy piece to add to your wardrobe if you’re tired of basic black trousers.  These Michael Kors pants are well-priced and very well-made.  The tab front is also very flattering, since it lays flat across the belly.  Looking for something under-$50?  Try these NY&Co. pants, also in tall.

Shoes // For a wider-leg trouser, you want a pointed-toe shoe.  I found this pair of Nine West pumps.  If you prefer flats, you can also try these Journee T-straps or these d’Orsay flats from Old Navy.

Bag // I feel like I sing Matt & Nat’s praises every few weeks.  This is their fabulous Loyal tote bag.  Vegan leather that looks like the real thing, and style that doesn’t quit at a good price.

Accessories // This jewelry is from a fabulous line called Missoma.  Their moonstone locket can be clipped onto any necklace you own or you can buy the coordinating rope chain necklace.  And their Isa twist chain bracelet is perfectly dainty, and can be worn alone or with other pieces.

To finish the look, I copied the model’s neutral nail polish look.  My favorite feminine neutral is Deborah Lippmann Modern Love.

What I love about an outfit post like this is it’s contains basics and can be customized to fit personal style – infinite possibilities! I’ve asked this before, and yup I’m going to ask it again, how do you keep this kind of layered look from being sloppy? I feel like my layers always need to be adjusted and it just makes me so uncomfortable! Is it a body type thing? A fit thing?

I think you’ve recommended layering a cami OVER the button down to keep it smooth, but then I feel like I would have another layer I’m adjusting constantly.

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]
