Happy Hour: Apple Picking Season

Sep 30, 2011

Now that it is officially Fall, I’m searching for hot cocktail recipes.  The kind of cozy libations that you would sip while enjoying the crispy, cool air on your back patio or roof deck.  So why not start with the quintessential Autumn cocktail, Hot Apple Cider.

Hot Apple Cider Cocktail

Recipe makes two cocktails

1 cup apple cider
1/4 cup Calvados (apple brandy)
1/4 cup brandy
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons pure maple syrup
2 apple slices, cut sides rubbed with lemon juice, for garnish

Divide the apple cider into your favorite mugs.  Microwave the cider until piping hot.  Add one teaspoon of maple syrup to each cup and stir until completely dissolved.

Now, add 1/8 of a cup of Calvados, brandy and lemon juice to each mug.  Cool with ice cubes, if the drink is too hot to sip.  Then, add the apple slice garnish and sip.  You may also add a cinnamon stick garnish if you’re feeling festive.

J.CREW Dolman Sweaterdress (Net-a-Porter, $140)

This sweater dress is the perfect choice for a Fall barbecue or dinner party.  Pair with chocolate brown tights and knee high boots, add a scarf or a long necklace and prepare for a comfortable night out or in, as the case may be.

Just got this dress and I LOVE it! My only recommendation to curvier women is to find a thick belt to go with it because it looked a little funny on (I have a bigger bust than the model… to put it mildly. The belt perked it right up.) Fabulous choice Belle!

If you are having a fall party, you could also heat the cider in a stock pot on the stove and add mulling spices (cinnamon, clove, orange spice, dried cranberries, etc) in a little cheese cloth sachel. It makes the whole room smell amazing. My mom used to do this for a fall party every year and makes for a very cozy home!

When you guys say cider, do you mean apple juice or apple wine?

    Love the dress!

    ConfusedEuropean- https://www.mass.gov/agr/massgrown/cider_juice_difference.htm

Here's the difference between apple juice and apple cider. You'd be able to use either in this recipe but you'd get a richer flavor with the apple cider.

CE-To my knowledge cider is unfiltered apple juice. But I think BT's right, you could probably use either.
