Trendspotting: Sequins for Daytime

Feb 2, 2010

Last Friday, fashion icon Oscar de la Renta visited the set of The View to discuss his Domincan roots, his charity work and his truly incredible Spring collection.  While being interviewed, Mr. de la Renta expressed his belief that women should not be afraid to wear sequins in the daytime because we all need a little sparkle in our lives.  Amen, brother, amen!

While some ladies think that sequins are too frilly for the Hill, I disagree.  I wouldn’t wear a liquid beaded dress to the office but I regularly wear sparkly camisoles and cardis with shimmer detail to add a little spice to my work wardrobe.  Simple pair your otherwise staid suit with a hint of shimmer and watch the compliments roll in with the breeze.

Here are a few pieces that are sure to add some sparkle and shine to even the most boring suits and separates.  And if anyone gives you any guff, just remind them that you have Mr. de la Renta’s blessing.

A Little More-Sequin Top

Gryphon Sequin Cami ($118)

While I wouldn’t recommend the leather pants for the office, this tank could be paired with a subdued cardigan and pencil or a charcoal grey suit.

A Little Less-Sequin Top

Elizabeth and James Tokyo Top ($365)

This blouse could be fabulous with a nude cami underneath, tucked into a skirt or pants. It would also be perfect with jeans for the weekend.

A Little More-Sequin Cardigan

Demi Sec Cardigan ($128)

This nude cardigan can be worn with pretty much anything in your wardrobe, making it the perfect Winter-blahs pick me up.

A Little Less-Sequin Cardigan

Sequin Bow Cardigan ($24)

There’s nothing wrong with a little less sequins, especially when a little less is as adorable as this cardi.  Pair it with a chiffon or ruffly blouse and a textured skirt.

A Little More-Sequin Skirt

Elie Tahari Bennet Floral Skirt ($269)

I sometimes wear a knee length sequined pencil to work, but I think this “printed” skirt and blouse combo would look fabulous in any professional setting.

A Little Less-Sequin Skirt

Ocean Mist Skirt ($128)

If you want a little sparkle, the waist detail on this printed skirt is really adorable.  Because the skirt has such a defined print, I would keep the blouse really simple.  Maybe a sheer black Georgette or a complimentary purple boatneck.

@CapHillStyle great post. I think you are right, any daytime sparkle just needs to be balanced – oh, & if it feels wrong, it probably is.

    Good advice.

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.
