Date Week: The French Bistro

Feb 9, 2010

Tucked away on a side street in Penn Quarter, Bistro d’Oc has all the trademarks of a perfect date restaurant: dim lighting, cozy atmosphere and an extensive wine list.

The first time I stumbled into this restaurant years ago, I was impressed by the ambience and the bold decor.  How many D.C. restaurants would feel comfortable painting there wall a vibrant pumpkin orange?  Mixed with the dim lighting and the low chatter of happy customers, this restaurant feels exactly like a bistro should feel: cozy.

The bistro also boasts a fairly impressive wine list for such a small establishment.  And unlike many Washington area restaurants, the wait staff don’t look down upon you if you’re not a oenophile.  So feel free to ask questions, your server will be happy to suggest something that you will enjoy.

As for menu suggestions, I particularly enjoy the watercress soup, the duck entree and the steak frites.  And if you can make it out of there without ordering Crepes Suzette, you are a far stronger person than I am.  Also, unlike most restaurants where the special is just an amalgam of leftovers, the specials at Bistro d’Oc are usually superb.

So if you’re looking for a restaurant with romantic ambience, excellent food, and good wine at a price point that won’t eat up your tax refund, this is the place for you.  And if you can’t get in for a Valentine’s Day dinner, the Brunch is also highly recommended.

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]
