This season, the number one look for casual outerwear is the barn jacket. I spotted a few that I really like, but upon further evaluation, I’m not sure the look is for me in the longer term. My wardrobe is no longer in a place where I can own one-year pieces, and this feels like a one year piece. So if you love the idea of a casual jacket for fall, but the barn jacket isn’t top of the list, here are some alternatives all for under $200.
This Mac Coat from Everlane comes in three easy, neutral colors. It has the relaxed feel of a barn jacket without the country-fied details. It’s also a great trench alternative.
This shorter NVLT duffle coat is a great fall/winter option. I love the standup collar, the buttons, etc. And this vibrant red color is an awesome alternative if you have a closet full of neutrals.
These longer quilted jackets are popular for fall. They’re an easy throw on over work clothes or workout clothes. This one from Zella is my favorite because I like the four color ways.
Quince makes a great biker jacket in both plus and misses size ranges. If you want a statement jacket that you can wear this year, next year, and into the future, this one is it. Prefer a more modern cut to your leather jacket? Try this Free People one.
I spotted this herringbone jacket from Marine Layer and immediately dropped it into the group chat. I mean, come on… It’s relaxed and cool but professional and chic. I’m dying.

The link for the NVLT coat goes to the Everlane coat
Bless you for flagging. This new link service doesn’t work as well as the old link service.
The herringbone coat is swoon-worthy
Absolutely all that and a bag of chips. š meets the criteria of a piece Iād wear for multiple seasons
Thoughts on whether the Barbour wax jacket hits the barn coat trend but also has some staying power?
If you will wear it for years to come, then it’s not a trend. But yes, I think a Barbour coat hits both.
Wow, I bought that Marine Layer herringbone jacket immediately – I was just trying on what felt like my entire closet today, trying to pick a fall jacket/cardi layer that dressed up my sweatpants but didn’t look so dressy that it was weird. Sadly Nordstrom didn’t have my size, but I was able to find it at Marine Layer.
This is the time of year I get super sad – I want to buy ALL the jackets (and sweaters) but live in a land with no fall and little winter.
That herringbone jacket from Marine Layer is amazing.
I wish that herringbone jacket was in a longer version too!
