I work in employee benefits, so I get involved in a lot of medical billing issues. The only place I disagree with the WaPo article is do NOT be afraid to appeal! Sometimes it takes all three appeals to get a claim covered. The third appeal is external(meaning not the insurance company) and they’re more likely to agree with you that yes, that procedure was medically necessary. The appeals process can take months and you only have so long to file, so you can start the process while working other avenues. And ask the provider/facility to put your bill on administrative hold while you work through the appeal so you don’t go to collections.

If you have employer coverage and feel comfortable with your HR/benefits people, get them involved. They can work with people like me and other routes within the insurance company to sort out your issue.

I have been looking for cap-toe shoes in black and white everywhere for years! Any suggestions for black and white spectator pumps?

“The road to gender equality starts with doing the dishes” Love this-
To take it a step further… I was raised in a home where the boys did dishes like the girls and we had to cut grass like the boys. I credit this giving me confidence that I could do/achieve anything the guys did. Treat your children equally and they are more likely to feel equal.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
