The Beauty Edit: Lume Deodorant

Mar 14, 2023

Working a 90-day legislative session can be stressful.  Important hearings, big deadlines, tense issues are a frequent occurrence.  So is the sweat that comes along with stressful work.  And since having a baby, the sweat isn’t confined to my under arms.

I started using Lume Invisible Cream Deodorant a couple of years ago after a reader recommended it.  I was searching for an aluminum-free and baking soda-free deodorant, and I couldn’t find one that also worked against stress sweat.  I also couldn’t find a deodorant that controlled sweat through an entire workday.

As I mentioned, Lume is aluminum and baking soda free.  Lume also controls sweat and odor for 72-hours.  And unlike many traditional deodorants, the product can be safely used on any part of the body from your underarm to your inner thighs to your intimate areas.

Lume comes in multiple formulations and fragrances.  They make a traditional stick.  They make a softer cream stick.  They also make a lotion-style cream for maximum coverage.

My drink of choice is the tangerine-scented cream stick deodorant.  The scent is a little strong when first applied, but it complements the perfume I wear.  I also own the unscented for days when I don’t want to wear scent.

Not sure what scent you will prefer? Lume makes a trial pack so you can give all of the unscented fragrances a try.

For the heat of summer, I purchase the bundle that has both the cream and the stick.  This way I have the stick for my underarms and the cream for other areas of my body.  If you don’t buy both, the stick runs out very quickly, especially when the humidity hits.

Also, if you need more assistance than deodorant provides alone, the company makes a body wash and a set of body wipes (which are great for post-workout).

As for effectiveness, I don’t think I ever stepped into a courtroom or into a tense committee hearing without sweating through my suit, until I started using Lume.  This deodorant has saved me a fortune on dry-cleaning because it doesn’t leave white marks.  It has also prevented the fear that you take off your blazer and get hit with “the smell.”

I was a loyal buyer of Old Spice stick.  I bought it at Costco in bulk, that’s how sure I was that I would be using it forever.  But Lume completely changed my thinking on deodorant.  Rarely, have I purchased a product that I felt so good about.  Being aluminum-free, baking soda-free, hypoallergenic, and effective — wins all around.

With the hot weather of summer on the horizon, now is the time to try Lume.  You will never go back.

Does it leave marks on your clothes?

Hi Belle! Just letting you know that for a few weeks now, the “load older posts” button has not worked for me, either on my phone or on a web browser. I would love to scroll back and catch up on posts that I may have missed!

I appreciate the many positive points of this product. The marketing bothers me, though. Seems to be trying to appeal to the idea that women smell bad, everywhere, all the time. Maybe retrograde.

I agree on their marketing. At some point they started emailing me (thanks, some company, for selling my info!) and was really off-put by the, frankly, gross marketing. I don’t remember the exact phrasing, but the essence of it was, “GOT INTIMATE AREA STINK?” Seriously? Get some tact. It’s a unisex product but they lean towards targeting women – who is that going to appeal to?

Given the founder’s motivation AND medical background as an OB/GYN they should be more tactful; leave the, ‘gross,’ marketing for Dr. Squatch and whomever.

Glad it works, though. With Abra’s review, I’d consider trying it despite my misgivings about the marketing. It seems like a lot of the aluminum-free deos I’ve tried don’t work as well for me after a while – like I need a rotation.

      • Jill says:

Geez, marketers. Agree that with so much going for it, this product doesn’t need the shock marketing. Appreciate the recommendations from everyone.

Agreed! I was desperate for a deodorant that worked post-partum…NOTHING was working. Found Lume and it’s great!! Will put it to the test this summer, but I’ve been using it for 6 months now and love it.

ordered as fast as i could. Your recommendations are always gold!

I bought this at your recommendation a few moths/year (?) ago and have been SO pleasantly surprised! I have ruined too many dresses/blazers with old deoderant stains/marks/residue, and since using Lume have not had issues with sweating through things or residue/marks. I’ve used the unscented, but I am going to try the tangerine or the multi-scent pack. Thanks for another great rec!

  7. SierrA says:

This is literally the only deodorant that got me through IVF, pregnancy, and postpartum (my hormones went haywire and I stunk so bad!). I have the wipes in my bag for touch ups and use the body wash too. I have really sensitive skin and it hasn’t had any negative effects. Love it so much!

  8. Alli says:

Also Target sells it now so you can sample the scents in store instead or ordering online.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
