Saw It On Social: Tommy John Loungewear

Feb 23, 2023

As you might imagine, being a blogger, I see a lot of sponsored content.  Too much sponsored content, actually.  And most of what I buy through those links disappoints, so when several bloggers started promoting Tommy John products, I was skeptical.  Could the underwear brand with the ads I’d heard so many times on the radio be a value add to my wardrobe?

In 2008, Tommy John was founded by a husband and wife team who wanted to re-design men’s underwear.  They wanted to focus on creating a good fit (no riding, no bunching) and using comfortable fabrics.  Over time, they applied the same principles to other cotton clothing pieces, including loungewear and pajamas.

The sponsored posts that fill my feed discuss how soft and comfortable Tommy John’s clothes are.  How I’ll never want to take off my new loungewear.  How I can wear it to anything (except work).  And how I’ll wonder how I ever lived without it.  Even for the purple prose of influencer sponsorships, that’s a hard sell.

To test out the product line, I bought three pieces: the Terry Lounge Pants, the Waffle Henley, and the Second Skin Longsleeve Tee.

The Lounge Pants were thick, soft and very comfortable.  I loved wearing them.  My only complaint is that they are too heavy to sleep in.  They also won’t be wearable in summer, because they are warm and thick.  If I had to do it over, I would choose these waffle leggings that give me the cozy winter vibes that’s not quite as hot.

The Second Skin Tee is very soft.  The seams and stitching also appear very well done.  Comparing it to my favorite tee, a maternity tee from Ingrid & Isabel which is wearable by any body type, it’s equally good.  I like that the t-shirt is a bit longer, but depending on your body type, that may not be for you.

I saved my favorite piece, the Waffle Henley for last.  I liked the white sweater so much that I bought the black one the next day.  I love a good multiple, and this sweater looks so much more expensive than it is and it’s more comfortable than you can imagine.  You can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a coffee run or with jeans and a camel blazer for a quick meeting.  The piece is sublime.

My one word of caution on Tommy John pieces: They run a little small, especially in the arms.  So bear that in mind when you order.

Bottom Line: So few things in this life live up to the hype, so to find something that you love is such an unexpected pleasure.  I love these pieces so much, that I was almost glad that it was -8-degrees tonight so I could wear the henley to cozy up on the couch.  My only hope is that they continue to wear well through washing and wearing, because I think they’re about to become my favorite Sunday afternoon clothes.

This was timely for me. I was shopping for pajamas recently and was considering Cozy Earth. They happened to have a President’s Day sale, so I was planning to make a purchase; the combo I was going to pull the trigger on was marked down to $83.25 on the product page. Add it to the cart? $148. Errr.

Use their chat to talk to a rep who wasn’t empowered to help right away though she was able to confirm it on her side; had to escalate it. I didn’t hear back for days, then finally got a message that they’d be willing to issue me a custom invoice at the product page price.

Meh, pass. I don’t really want to do business with a company that doesn’t enable their support to correct problems like that.

But I’ll give Tommy John a look, now! I love that waffle top.

I re-read and could’ve been clearer: I don’t want to do business with a company that doesn’t enable their support to correct problems like that same-day without a weird escalation process during which 1) other customers will encounter the same thing and 2) the product will sell out rendering the matter moot. Just a poor customer experience, overall.

It isn’t that $148 is outlandish for them, it’s that they had a discrepancy and weren’t equipped to resolve it one way or another swiftly.

Thanks for the review! I have some Tommy John loungewear and it’s held up for about 2 years now. That sweater henley looks fantastic. A request should you be looking for another Saw it On Social…ADAY. I am so curious to know the real scoop on those pieces before I bite the bullet and spend big cash.

In late 2020, my husband and I replaced all of our underwear with Tommy Johns and have never looked back. Except for a couple of pairs that my dog ripped a hole in, everything looks just as good 2 years later. No riding up, no wedgies, no bunching. Last year I started adding in TJ lounge pants. I’m a fan of the Lounge Jogger. I find them a bit more light weight than the waffle weave, which living in TN allows me to wear them year round.

I received a Second Skin tee and shorts set for Christmas and I LOVE them.
I’m intrigued by their underwear too.
Nordstrom was selling Tommy John for a hot minute, looks like they only have some underwear left, only an XL in some of their sleep tops.

I ordered underwear and lounge pants. Really hoping these are the holy grail underwear that I have been looking for. I have not found anything to replace my favorite but discontinued wacoal underwear. And I have tried like 20 different brands. Fingers crossed!

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
