One Important Read. Women, particularly women of color, often have their medical concerns dismissed by doctors.

During my first semester of law school, I went to the hospital with painful, sudden heart flutters.  Two doctors told me I was just emotional about law school and needed to calm down.  After days of research, I found that, in some cases, anemia can cause similar issues with your heart.  I went back to one of the doctor’s and demanded a blood test, and wouldn’t you know it, severely anemic.  Women shouldn’t have to work this hard to be heard by doctors.

My Papa loved coconut cake. Loved.  My Nana would have to hide the cake in the back of the fridge behind leftovers or else he would find it, and there would be a slice missing (or three) by dinner time.  So I think of him every time someone posts about the Tom Cruise cake, a white chocolate, coconut concoction that I’m told is to die for.

Still trying to decide if I want to make it, or order it.  Either way, I’m sure it will be fantastic.  (Yes, $100 is a lot for cake.  But as a woman in the 21st Century, I have paid more to get less.  Who wouldn’t rather have cake than a lackluster “must-have” serum?)

  1. Jules says:

Not to be alarming, but those jewel magnets are most likely going to be choking hazards for your soon to be little one. We had to change our magnets to only be large ones and only put them up on the freezer section. (And not the size of the ornament of the magnet, the actual magnet part itself, since at 15 months he can somehow rip the magnet off the decorative part.)

    • Alisha says:

As a new mom, I have found the amount of unsolicited advice vast. Unless someone is asking for advice, it likely does not need to be offered

      • Jules says:

True, but I personally appreciated the advice I wasn’t thinking of that could endanger the kid, vs advice on like… sleep training tactics, Baby led weaning, products/gear, pumping schedule, etc that are more about personal preference and lifestyle. My dad told me about the magnets and I appreciated it so I’m passing it along since it wasn’t anything that was on my radar.

        • Belle says:

We’re at least months away from the baby proofing stage. When we get to that point, I will care about all of these things. Until then, I have plenty of pregnancy stuff to think about it.

  2. Lost says:

The ‘Mom Guilt’ article really hits home. Good read.

  3. Dee says:

    Lol
I am 42 and I take about 5 pills each morning, Rx + vitamins, plus another 3 in the evening before bed, 2 Rx 1 otc.
My perfect pill box is 7 days with AM and PM and I can take the daily box out and take it with me as needed. Then it snaps back in to the case.
    Yours is way cuter tho

  4. Natalie says:

The Beckham links goes to the Career Contessa article

  5. Danielle says:

I made the cake this weekend! It was delicious. I haven’t tried the real thing but I was happy with how it turned out.

  6. Jess says:

I work at Mayo clinic, and even there you have.to.advocate.for.yourself. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is.

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
