So next week is the start of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  I used to love this sale.  I used to stay up all night to be the first one there when it opened at Pentagon City.  But what used to be amazing feels gimmicky and disappointing now.

It started with #NSale and the Rewardstyle affiliate link frenzy a few years ago.  Now, Nordstrom has added tiered shopping (I don’t even want to know how much money one needs to spend to make ‘Icon’ status), so the pickings will be extra slim for those of us in the lowly cardholder class or heaven forbid, the public line. Quelle horreur.

I debated for a few days whether to discuss the Anniversary Sale at all.  Should I just skip it outright?  But then, I decided that the easiest thing would be to just do what I’ve always done: one post on cardholder opening day, one post on the best of what remains on public opening day.  No in store try-on videos.  No lengthy slideshows of “must-haves.”  Just what I’ve always done, narrowing down the plethora of options to a few favorites.

So I’ll see you on the 16th of July.  Hopefully, everything isn’t sold out by then.  But if Nordstrom wants to turn the once beloved Anniversary Sale into just another way to show off who can buy their way into the cool kids table, then so be it.  It’s theirs to ruin.

I agree that the Nordstrom sale seems gimmicky and disappointing. I was very disappointed last year when much was out of stock when I was able to purchase especially as many influencers continued to promote those items. This year I added items for some brands I love to my wish list (Elomi bras, Wit & Wisdom jeans, Olaplex). If I get them great, if not then I’m not worrying about it.

Oh my goodness I went into the Pentagon City Nordstrom a few weeks ago to look for a nice dress for my anniversary. SO DISSAPPOINTING!! There was nothing in the store. Like I even said “where are the clothes?” out loud. I ended up renting a dress on RTR. So don’t waste your time going to that store if you are in the area.

I got so caught up with the Gucci nail polish colors that I almost forgot to read the rest of the post! All of those Gucci pastel colors are amazing!!

  4. Lisa says:

I still love Nordstrom the store — we went into several higher-end dept stores recently to buy my mother and sister dresses for my wedding, and we only found anything we liked at Nordstrom — but I’m with you on the Anniversary Sale becoming super commercialized. I remember when $2k was the spending tier for whatever is one level above cardholder, and that at least seems doable for professionals with money to spend. Now the next-level tier is $5k, and like you, I don’t even want to know what it is for Icon.

  5. Jules says:

Wow that Aqua dress is a beaut! Don’t have anywhere to wear it to this year, but I want it 🙂
Agree with the Nordstrom sale. Yours is the only Nordstrom content I consume because I am bored/tired/overexposed to the mass consumerism/humble-bragging/endless try ons of other influencers.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
