A Weekend Watch. I’m deep into the sports documentaries right now.  Last night we watched the #equalpay doc LFG about the US Women’s Soccer Team.  Tonight, I will probably hit up The ’96 Effect and the impact that year had on women’s sport.

For years, I have resisted buying plants.  Taking care of them — making sure they get enough water, sunlight, all of it — was just not a task I wanted.  Then, I realized how important in-home air quality is and how plants can help clean up the air in your home.

My favorite spot to buy plants is Fern Plant Shop in Spokane (it’s the best), but if I can’t find what I’m looking for there, my next stop is Terrain.  I’ve ordered three plants from there and they’ve all showed up in perfect condition.  I bought this small Trailing Jade for a kitchen shelf, and the copper pot is so chic.

Want plants that bear fruit?  I bought a Calamondin Tree at Food52, and I can’t wait for it to produce little mandarins.  If you have a small space, this Terracotta Grow Kit is a great option.

  1. E says:

I’ve given up plants for now (toddler, job, etc.), but the biggest thing for indoor air quality has been my blueair filters. We have two large ones on the main level and smaller ones in each bedroom and my allergies are so, so much better.

  2. E says:

A million times yes to the article on why women are delaying (or in my case, skipping) motherhood. I love the quote about if it was truly the “greatest job in the world,” more men would be staying home to do it. Snaps.

    • Jess says:

I don’t know. It honestly felt kind of bitter to me. My cousin and her long time girlfriend are in talks right now about kids. As a lesbian couple, they’ve gotten a lot of things like “oh! so much maternal care there”. Except like my cousin said “I’m like only 10-20% as excited as she is.” They’re trying to figure it out. But I think it’s unfair to say if it was the best job in the world, men would be staying home to do it.

      • E says:

Huh, I never thought about it that way and wasn’t trying to leave out lesbian mothers or non-binary people. That’s tough when one potential parent wants a kid WAY more than the other. But I do think it is fair to say that if stay at home childrearing was truly as rewarding as some people claim it is, we’d see a greater distribution of men in hetero-normative couples choosing to stay at home and we’re simply not seeing that. And I completely share the author’s fire about legislation designed to prevent women from accessing abortions or birth control and placing a greater value on a *potential* new life over women’s existing lives, which have great value.

        • Emmy says:

I second Jess’s observation about how the article seemed bitter. Additionally, the author cites how other developed nations have better maternal care. My understanding is that their birth rates are declining as well, so that doesn’t seem to be a game changer in deciding whether or not to have a family. The US should improve in this area, but it seems it’s not the underlying cause for fertility rate decline.

    • Chelsea says:

It was just so histrionic, from the first paragraph to the end.

      • E says:

Can we at least think about the language we’re using even if we disagree with the piece? “Histrionic”? “Bitter”? Agree or disagree with the author–totally fine. However, the use of coded words akin to “hysterical” lobbed at a woman author isn’t helping any of us as women.

        • Jane says:

I didn’t find the article bitter or histrionic. It just didn’t take a deep dive into the subject. But as a person contemplating the plunge into motherhood, I completely agree with the author’s sentiment. I’ve heard from so many of my mom friends how hard parenting is while trying to work, especially this past year. We’re still living in a society that is designed for one person to work and one to stay home. I read a critique of the NYT piece that observed that nowhere are fathers/partners mentioned in this discussion about delaying motherhood-we continue to lay the burden of parenting on women alone. Until we shift our model to one that contemplates two working parents, we’ll continue to go in circles.

  3. Rachel says:

“Spiked snow-cone recipes, made in a Snoopy snow-cone maker” is the best sentence I’ve read in a while.

  4. BN says:

The Jerrybox lazy susan 3-tiered makeup organizer is amazing (and that is not something I say lightly!). My bathroom counter is transformed and it looks chic next to my marble vanity tray. Get the clear — the colors of the items you store in it will meld together giving off a colorful, bright, fresh vibe that I am really loving.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
