There is a reason the sky gets dark at night.  We were not meant to see everything all the time.  We were meant to rest and trust even in the darkness. // Morgan Harper Nichols

This new Pillow Talk mascara from Charlotte Tilbury is supposed to be a game-changer.  Thanks to a redesigned brush-head, the lashes are separated and lifted.  I’m making a lunch-hour trip to Nordstrom tomorrow to pick mine up, and I will report back.

I am abstaining from all think pieces about how my home is “over” or “dead” for the time being. There will come a time where weighing in about how economic disparities made the pandemic so much harder for New Yorkers to endure will feel possible or even appropriate, but for now, we are reeling from the loss of life, jobs, and literally loss of access to people we love. Declaring it “killed” ignores the daily work those of us still here are doing to support the community and culture that has made this one of the greatest cities in the world. Most of us couldn’t afford to flee fo greener pastures. To talk about the City having been killed is to reduce it to mere dollar signs. That’s never what it has meant to me.

I don’t think NYC is dead. places have ups and downs. i think there is a conversation to be had though about how too much money pouring into a place — whether it be a small montana ski town or a big thriving city — can set the whole thing up to fail.

      • E says:

Yes, the article seems to be criticizing those think pieces and talks about power dynamics and income/wealth inequality and how that is interacting with the virus and a future recovery period.

But I totally get staying away from articles that are potentially both useless and stressful to read. It’s a good policy right now.

  2. A says:

E, don’t worry, I think most of us see those articles for the hyperbole they are. New York is not over or dead and I can’t envision it ever being that way during my lifetime.

Also, glad to see the post about the single/childless person carrying the rest of the office so they can have work/life balance with their kids. It’s nice to see some diversity of viewpoints among the barrage of articles saying women (and only women(!)) need work life balance to care for their children (facepalm).

  3. Lauren says:

Excited for your review of the mascara! I have worn makeup less than a handful of times since March/work from home. I’m starting to think it might give me a mental boost to start wearing again, even if it is just for myself! I need to find small/simple ways of brightening up my days.

  4. Jamie says:

Ahh yes, another “New York is dead” article. To this, I think Jerry Seinfeld has the perfect response. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/24/opinion/jerry-seinfeld-new-york-coronavirus.html

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
