Saw It On Social: Supergoop Glowscreen

Apr 20, 2020

Every summer, there seems to be one product that proliferates across the blogosphere.  One day, you see it in a magazine.  Then, it’s on a blog.  Then, two.  Then, 12.  And then, it fills your social media channels.

This year, that product seems to be Supergoop Glowscreen.

Supergoop Glowscreen advertises itself as a revolution in sunscreen.  The product has SPF 40 sun protection for outdoor, and copper peptides to protect your skin from the blue light emitted by your phone or computer.  It also has a ‘hydration cocktail’ of hyaluronic acid and B5 to moisturize skin.  The product also has a ‘pearlescent finish’ to give skin an instant glow.

The Popsugar review was the first one I read.  It features a writer with perfectly dewy, fresh-faced skin extolling the virtues of the product.  After that, so many bloggers wrote similar reviews.  Many talking about how the product’s light tint and shimmery glow allowed them to confidently go foundation free.  With reviews like that?  How could I not give it a try?

I ordered the product from Sephora and was excited to try it.  But from the moment I put it on, I was disappointed.

On my combination, acne-prone skin, the product looked oily.  The light tint also seemed to make my acne spots more obvious.  It almost looked like I had applied self-tanner.

When I tried to apply makeup over the Glowscreen, it mottled the finish of my foundation.  Instead of looking dewy, my skin just looked greasy.

If you have great skin, this product might work for you.  But I do not have great skin, and the product wasn’t a good fit.

There are many Supergoop products that I love, but this isn’t one of them.  Their Unseen Suncreen is one of my favorites.  I also like their Meadowfoam Sunscreen Oil for body because it’s very moisturizing.

Final Verdict: ???? out of 5 emojis.

This product isn’t for everyone.  It may work on those with even, balanced skin, but it doesn’t work on my combination skin.  As for the foundation replacement claim, I found it to be too sheer to replace the concealing and finishing effect of foundation.

If you’re looking for a foundation replacement, I like Dr. Jart Cicapair Correcting Cream.  Some readers have said the Dr. Jart is a little bit oily on their skin.  One reader recommended the Erborian CC Cream instead; it’s also one of Meghan’s favorite products.

Thanks for this review! Have had the product in my Sephora cart b/c it is seemingly e v e r y w h e r e now. Last summer I picked up Supergoop Moisturizer with sunscreen and was really quite pleased for everyday, walk to/from metro, and light activity. Can’t speak to how it does/does not play with foundation. May be worth a shot when warmer weather arrives.

Thank you for the review! I love Supergoop’s general sunscreen for my family (the huge bottle!) and the unseen sunscreen from your previous recommendation. I have combination skin with acne spots that I’d like to cover, and was hoping that the glowscreen was going to work for you. I think I’ll stick with my current routine for now.

  3. Eleni says:

Thanks so much for this review! It’s probably the only honest one I have seen. Supergoop also has a setting mist with SPF in it that I have been using since last summer and I really enjoy it.

  4. SG says:

Hot tip! Some Supergoog products are FSA eligible and you can order with your FSA card directly from FSAstore.com!

  5. Katie says:

Same – I’ve been intrigued by this product! As always appreciate the honest feedback. I think after this I’ll stick to the cicapair (that I learned about from you and is really great for balancing redness) plus a brightening primer!

  6. meghan says:

You’re the best. I love the Dr. Jart CIcapair correcting cream too, and it gives me a pretty good glow. FWIW, I have dry, acne-prone, acne-scarred skin, and it’s the one sunscreen I *actually* stick to wearing.

  7. RR says:

I have the cicapair tiger grass serum and it is AMAZING for redness reduction. Lightweight. Unfortunately no SPF so I pair it with my fav – colorscience sunforgettable brush on powder. I really love those 2 products.

  8. Rachael says:

I truly appreciate your honest reviews! I recently bought the Suntegrity face sunscreen based on your review because my skin is also acne-prone, and I love it!

  9. Megan says:

I also have combination, acne-prone skin and I really like Suntegrity’s Impeccable Skin with matte finish (https://www.suntegrityskincare.com/suntegrity-impeccable-skin-broad-spectrum-spf-30/). It provides some coverage, doesn’t leave me super shiny during the day, and is a mineral “clean” product, which I appreciate.

  10. Sara says:

lol, I just put this on for the first time this morning and I actually really liked the finish. I have SUPER dry skin, and it’s been moisturizing all day!

I don’t have perfect skin but I haven’t worn make-up in like 5+ weeks, so I’m impressed by it.

    • Belle says:

Talk a little more about what you like and what your skin type is. I’m sure the product works for some, but on my skin type it was just a no go.

      • Danielle says:

I have been using it for about a month and like it too. I put it on before I go outside (over regular moisturizer I apply in the morning) and it just feels like a nice, luxurious, moisturizing sunscreen. I don’t think it does a ton for evening out my complexion but there is a definite “glow” and since I’m not wearing other makeup at the moment, it’s nice to put on something that feels a little special. I have pretty clear/easy skin, a little dry, and haven’t noticed any bad side effects.

      • Sara says:

Super dry skin, pink undertones. I have mostly clear skin but definitely get hormonal acne (30s are fun). My skin seemed to absorb it well. I’ve used other Supergoops in the past – I think the last one I had was the matteifying one and it was fine – and got this Glowscreen when Nordstrom was doing their 25% off everything sale.
Like I said, haven’t worn makeup in weeks so haven’t tried layering it on yet.

  11. Jess says:

I too am a fan of the Glowscreen. I ordered the baby tubes of both the unseen & the glowscreens and liked them both. I have combination/leaning to dry skin and felt like I like the Unseen under foundation and will use the glowscreen with tinted moisturizer on the days when I go sans full makeup.

  12. Melissa says:

Thank you for always-honest reviews. I have 40s-combination-not-perfect skin, and did not like the Glowscreen. I like the City Sunscreen Serum under makeup. And the Unscreen Sunscreen is pretty good, but I don’t wear it layered with anything.

  13. sunnyia says:

Thanks for this review! I have had it in my cart for the Sephora sale but was hesitating – glowy products can be so hit or miss. I think we have similar skin, so this is good to know.

  14. Amanda says:

Thank you! I use the Supergoop sunscreen on myself and my daughters all summer. It doesn’t make me breakout so it’s a favorite. I was on the fence on buying the glowscreen for daily wear. I’ll stick with my ITcosmetics CC lotion. Thanks for your honest review!

  15. NK says:

Thank you so much for this review! I keep seeing it everywhere and have been so tempted by it, but I’m trying to use my regular sunscreens up first. You’ve been the only negative review of the product but this also feels like the most honest review so I really appreciate it.

    • Belle says:

It just didn’t work on my skin. Combination, slightly olive, and it looked wrong. Meh, at best. My guess is it works well on other skin types.

  16. Amanda says:

Glad I read this review! Sounds like we have the same skin (and isolation skin means more breakouts from stress),
Dr Jart BB cream is my current go to – enough coverage (and buildable).

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
