Saw It On Social: Birdies Flats

Apr 6, 2020

When the weather turned chilly and filled the air with some weird kind of hail-snow, I became even more homebound than I was before.  Which means that my moccasin slippers have barely come off of my feet.  They may need to be surgically removed.

So when the soothsaying algorithmic gods at Facebook decided that I needed to try Birdies — a flat that purports to be as comfortable as a slipper —  who was I to tell them that they were wrong?  After all, Meghan Markle wears them.

Birdies are “a designer flat [with] the luxurious comfort of a slipper.”  The shoes are built with seven layers of cushion and support.  They also come in a variety of styles from a vintage-inspired bedroom slipper to a modern leather loafer.

For my test drive, I chose the Starling loafer in taupe leather.  Basically, I wanted a shoe that I can wear with casual dresses this spring or wear with jeans in the fall.

I received my Birdies and immediately put them on.  Going from my Ugg slippers to Birdies, I expected to be disappointed.  I figured I would leave the comfort of my mocs and fall into a stylish flats that was ‘meh’ on the comfort scale.  (Hey, Sarah Flint, looking at you.)

But to my complete and pleasant surprise, I slipped on the Birdies and immediately noticed the much-better-than-anticipated arch support and the cushiony soft feel.  The leather was a little stiff, so a slight pinch was noticeable for the first three days, but no blisters formed.  And once they stretched a bit, they got even better.

Longtime readers may remember how much I love a rubber-soled flat.  The shock absorption just makes such a difference to my feet when I’m walking long distances.  And these Birdies flats have a rubber sole, but somehow still look cool and sophisticated.

I don’t know how the shoes will hold up over time.  I’ve heard good things from other bloggers about durability.  Some even claim that the flats eventually mold to your feet.   But I’ve only had them a little while, so I can’t put those claims to the test.

Bottom line, if you need a nice commute shoe, a comfortable work shoe, or a travel shoe that looks sleek and professional, Birdies are them.  Are they cheap?  No.  But they run in the same price-range as Rothy’s, and they’re leather.  Frankly, if Rothy’s are too casual for you or don’t provide enough support, Birdie’s may be your best solution.

Like all Saw It on Social items, I bought the Birdie’s leather flats with my own cash.  No sponsorships or gifted items were solicited or accepted.  But now I’m thinking I may need black pair to wear with skinny trousers.  Also, I will earn a small commission through an affiliate-marketing program if you purchase through one of these links.

Purchased in leopard print! I’be been stalking these for a while debating if they would actually be comfortable. Love the Saw it on Social postings!

  2. eleni says:

Thanks for this review! I have had them in and out of my cart for months and just couldn’t decide on if I should give them a try!

  3. Catherine says:

I bought these in the green velvet last fall and love them! Planning on getting the taupe leather as well.
Also, I’m Sarah Flint’s defense, I have a pair of the perfect pumps and they truly are the best combination of attractive/sexy but also supportive heels I own. I think the molded footbed is unique to the perfect pumps and isn’t part of the other shoes, so that might explain why the flats were merely ‘meh.’

  4. Decatur_mama says:

Abra, can I ask, do you have narrow, average or wide feet? I want to order these but have a wide toebox and a normal heel.
Also, really appreciated your post from the 4th. Please keep blogging and posting on Instagram!

  5. Katy says:

At the risk of being embarrassed, can someone tell me about the smell retention for these? One reason I ended up with Rothys is because I really like the ability to wash them…

    • E says:

I got you, Katy. They do honestly absorb a lot of smell. I have the velvet ones and gotta do some major de-scentifying.

    • A says:

No comment on Birdies, but adding smartwool secret sleuth no show “socks” to my Cole Haan penny pinch loafers solved the small problem for me!

  6. Lisa says:

Abra – how would you compare them to Tieks?

  7. Becky says:

These are beautiful, and will go in my ‘cart’ of items I am considering for purchase.
Also – I think there is no apostrophe in Birdies.

  8. Sierra Delta says:

I just bought a pair of the Starling loafers in cognac (clicked through from here, so I hope you get something from Birdies!). “Sheltering in place” is giving me too many opportunities to peruse new footwear choices. . .

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
