Kites rise against the wind — not with it. // Winston Churchill

Get it Girl. These are the stories of 97 women, from 50 states, who’ve run for office.

It’s a Deal. This cap sleeve work dress comes in 13 colors, runs to 2XL, and looks way more expensive than its $40 price.

Winner Take All. On collecting the new ‘trophy of domesticity,’ the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer.

Solo Victory. Personally, if we’re choosing trophies, I prefer my Dyson V10 Cordless vacuum.

The Gatekeepers. What hiring managers are really looking for, and why they reject candidates.

Sale Priced. J.Crew Factory has 60% off everything.  I bought this herringbone suit.

Scrubbed Down. What exactly is ‘clean beauty’?

Foot First. Love these black and white sneakers from Topshop. And my beloved Superga leopard sneaks are on sale.

Baby Loves. Inside the big business of baby making.

Loved Up. Ann Taylor has a cute Valentine’s Day shop. These pajamas are great.

Growing up with grandparents from Minnesota, I had heard about hot dish.  But because my grandmother couldn’t cook a lick, we never ate hot dish.

So when I started dating my husband, who was born in Western Wisconsin, I thought I would finally get to try an authentic Midwestern hot dish.  Sadly, I married the only Midwesterner who finds the regions ubiquitous tater-tot casserole to be inedible.  But with Amy Klobuchar hosting hot dish parties in Iowa, the topic of “Lutheran casseroles” was revived in our house.

Enter Samosa Chaatdish from Worthy Pause.  Kyle has agreed to give this Indian-influenced casserole a try.  I’m hoping its amazing.  If you have a favorite casserole/hot dish recipe, leave it in the comments.

The Samosa Chaatdish link is going to J Crew for me.

Highly recommend the hot dish recipe!! It takes a few steps, but so good. If it’s just for two people, I recommend halving it. It makes a ton.

  3. Hitha says:

SAMOSA CHAATDISH? THE ONLY WAY IT COULD BE MORE ME IS IF IT’S DRIZZLED WITH TACO BELL HOT SAUCE.

Hello from Minnesota, land of hotdish! I won’t pick a favorite, but your post made me think of this book. It’s really excellent and gives you a little flavor of some midwestern food culture.

  5. Kate says:

Ha! We Iowa natives call them casserole, not hot dish. I recommend Smitten Kitchen’s Broccoli-Chicken-Wild Rice casserole. Having now spent most of my adult life in DC and Chicago, this tastes like home but without copious amounts of cream-of-something soup and salt. https://smittenkitchen.com/2014/03/broccoli-cheddar-and-wild-rice-casserole/

  6. Terri says:

    ALL HAIL THE HOTDISH!

  7. NK says:

Thanks for sharing the samosa chaatdish recipe– very excited to try it!

  8. Aly says:

Being from Minnesota, I also love a good hotdish. One of my favorites that I have made recently is the Chicken and Wild Rice Hotdish from Well Plated. https://www.wellplated.com/chicken-and-wild-rice-casserole/

  9. Sof says:

I’m from the great midwest and truly hate hotdish. But I love Indian food, so good luck with chaatdish!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
