The Range: Bold Headbands

Oct 30, 2019

One of the popular fall trends is big, bold headbands.  It’s like we’ve all time-traveled back to the 1980s.  As we think about ways to jazz up our looks for the holidays, headbands are a nice option.

Are they for work?  That depends on where you work.  But with a simple outfit, they’re a bold accessory for holiday events.

Corner Office

Jennifer Behr Lorelei Headband ($289)

Cubicle Farm

Lele Sadoughi Velvet Headband ($49)

Big headbands, high waisted pants, big blazers…. walking through midtown Manhattan is like walking in a time warp.

We just need leg warm ups to come back and everything will be right with the world 🙂

  2. Jess says:

I just can’t with the big headbands! Small ones, boho ones, interesting ones with designs, yes, but the big velvet ones? They make every person I’ve ever seen them on look dated.

  3. Katie says:

How do you recommend wearing them to avoid looking like you’re wearing an 80’s halloween costume? 🙂 Hair up? Teased behind the headband?

  4. Monica T says:

Wow, didn’t know this was a thing. Especially a $300 thing. I’ll stick to a silk or cotton scarf if I need a headband I think, I couldn’t pull this look off in the ACTUAL 80s.

  5. Alexandra D'Angola says:

    A $300 headband, really?

Coat aside, I honestly can’t imagine a corporate office or courtroom where one would wear it?

    • Belle says:

It wasn’t for that. I put it up as an accessory for holiday parties.

      • Alexandra D'Angola says:

Ok. I still think this particular piece, and price point, missed the mark. Especially for such a trend.

        • Belle says:

I never expected that anyone would spend $300 on a headband. I showed the Jennifer Behr headband because it’s a trend, and that’s the brand that is at the top of the price point. If I was showing a trench, I’d post a Burberry that might be $1,800+, I don’t expect anyone to buy it, it’s to show the range of the market. That’s why the affordable option is a set of 6 for $12.

    • Team headband says:

I’m a lawyer and people wear them at my office… not to court or even with a suit, but on a regular day. I’m not going to spend $300 on a headband but that one is gorgeous. I’m not sure what’s so offensive about a fun trend.

      • Alexandra D'Angola says:

I’m in the corner office. There’s nothing offensive about a fun trend. But if you’re going to run a fashion blog, don’t be surprised or rude to hear feedback – positive or negative. Not sorry to not spend $300 on a piece of velvet my college-aged cousin could find for $20.

        • Belle says:

Since the post also features 6 headbands for $12, I didn’t understand why someone would be upset that, in showing a range of prices, it showed a $300 headband. Because someone is buying the $300 headband. I didn’t think it was strange that you thought a $300 was frivolous, I find it frivolous. But the point of the Range post is to show the range of prices that are available for a type of item.

  6. JL says:

Are people wearing these with hair down? Hair up? TBH, my hair looks good with headbands, and I’ve kind of been waiting for them to make a comeback. Don’t judge me, lol.

  7. Jess says:

I didn’t realize $300 headbands existed but I am here for it. (I mean, I won’t be participating but love knowing it exists). Thanks for the fun post, the range is one of my favorite features!

  8. B says:

Oh God, they’re back. I still remember vividly when I was in primary school and they were in fashion. They would never fit properly and I’d get headaches from them digging into the side of my head behind the ears. Not to mention they always came into conflict with my glasses. Ugh.

  9. Morgan says:

Thank you for sharing the $300 option! I’ve seen the knotted variety all over the place and wasn’t feeling it, but this is first I’ve seen the braided piece – I must have it! Thankfully, Zara, Urban Outfitters, and &OtherStories have braided versions that are available at a more accessible price point. While I agree it’s not work appropriate (for me), I’ll definitely rock it this holiday season. Thanks as always, Belle!

  10. BN says:

I literally had zero clue these were back on trend. Thank you Belle! I would have felt so dumb if I found out like 18 months from now…

  11. AEM says:

I love the Corner Office one! It looks beautifully designed. I won’t be spending $300, but love seeing what the more expensive look is like for this trend. Thanks for including it!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
