The Weekly Edit: Forget-Me-Nots

Sep 12, 2019

What a busy two weeks since we last spoke.

Kyle and I are married.  Sort of.  I applied for our license in July, and we planned to go to the Flathead County Courthouse to have it signed the Friday before the wedding.  But then some things happened — a truck ran over several of our decorations, my job melted down suddenly, and there were a ton of people competing for our attention — and at 5:07PM on Friday, I went to take a shower before the welcome dinner and was overwhelmed by the feeling that I’d forgotten something.

Oh, s**t.

When I called my Father to tell him that I had failed to accomplish the only task beyond the “I dos” that needed to be performed that weekend, he responded, “You’re a lawyer, how do you forget the license?”  (Harsh, but fair.)  My only answer being that on that day, I was not a lawyer, I was a bride, and that neither he (also a lawyer) nor the groom remembered either.

Luckily, my momentary panic was cured by a quick visit to WestLaw.  Because in Montana, we have something called attested marriage.  So Kyle and I will drive to Kalispell next month, submit a declaration of marriage to the court, and all of this will be a funny story that my Father felt the need to include in his wedding toast and will likely retell for the rest of his life.

Personally, I think this whole debacle was just the universe punishing me for rolling my eyes at people who said, “if at the end of the day, you and Kyle are married, that’s all that matters.”  Well played, Karma, well played.

Beyond that, Kyle and I have been using our honeymoon vacation days to paint our laundry room, re-sod our backyard, build a fence, and do all the home projects we’ve been putting off.  Sure, it’s not Pina Coladas on the beach, but this is married life.

American Factory is a must watch for any American concerned about the future of U.S. manufacturing.  The documentary tells the story of a shuttered GM factory reopened by a Chinese company and staffed by Chinese and American workers toiling side by side.  What happens when different cultures, worker safety, and a move toward unionization collide?

Ann Taylor’s Friends & Family Sale is upon us (40% off with code FRIENDS40).  And it couldn’t come soon enough, given the state of my work attire.

Unlike many Ann Taylor sales, suiting is eligible for the discount (yes!).  Given that I have my basics covered, I am going to buy the deep pine-green suit they have on sale right now.  I think it will look incredible with leopard heels.  This classic v-neck dress is also on my wish list.

As for casual clothing, I picked up this plum tunic top because I was smitten with the color.  I also snapped up this nugget station necklace in your choice of white or yellow metal.  It’ll be so nice with my fleet of sheath dresses.

All of the women I trust to give book recommendations — Hitha, Grace, and Meghan (though she’s still on probation from that Matchmaking for Beginners debacle) — have said American Royals is phenomenal.  I hope to find some time to read it this weekend, but I may need to decamp to a coffee shop to escape the noise from our Home Renovation Honeymoon.

Savory Roasted Cherries.  I was skeptical, but then I had them.  The cherries are the perfect mix of sweet, peppery and savory.

You can serve them on a salad with peaches, goat cheese and almonds or use them as a glaze for roasted pork tenderloin.  People will think they’re eating dinner at Nigella Lawson’s house, because they’re the kind of unexpected deliciousness that stays with you.

A friend even suggested serving them on Marscapone gelato for a dessert option for those who hate sweets.  But if you don’t like desserts, you’re not welcome in my house. (Kidding. Mostly.)

Full disclosure: Amazon gifted me this Find dress in June, and it sat in my closet for the bulk of the summer because I thought it was meh.  Then, the day I drove to Montana for my wedding, I realized that most of my dresses were packed.  So needing something comfortable and destruction-proof, I reached for it.

Boy, was I wrong about this dress.  It is so comfortable.  It is like wearing nothing at all.  And every time I wear it, people compliment me on it.  I loved it so much, I bought spent my own money on two more colors for fall (black and olive).

The dress comes in green, red, navy and black.  It’s a good, middle weight fabric.  The dress is very stretchy, but the material can be a little snug.  So if you plan to buy, I recommend sizing up (the dress goes up to US 18).  I’m a size six, and I’m in the medium for a more forgiving fit.

As for styling tips, I like it under a denim jacket with a long necklace.  I also wear it under a long cardigan around the house.  And I think it is going to be an absolute lifesaver for fall travel.

    Is the dressed ribbed?

If it makes you feel better, my husband and I only had our officiant and witnesses sign one copy of our license and not the (very much required) duplicate copy. Those people live in three different states, so we had to chain letter the duplicate. Oops.

We also forgot our marriage license and rings in my condo and we had to send someone to get them after the ceremony before the dinner. We did a second exchange of rings at dinner and it was very hilarious.

I bought a very similar AT v-neck dress (only it had sleeves), and I adore it.

  5. SJ says:

I am literally wearing that v neck dress as I type – one of the workhorses of my wardrobe! Great for days with lots of meetings.

Love the wedding story. Something always goes wrong! I think every bride has a story but yours is definitely a funny one!

  6. AB says:

Just here in support! I too messed up the license (let the officiant leave without signing it) and didn’t have it straightened out for months…

  7. Sof says:

I also left my wedding without signing the marriage license & my pastor–who is also my grandpa!–had my come to our hotel suite with 2 witnesses (my parents) to finalize things on our wedding night ????

To be fair, I had to leave my wedding in a bit of a hurry to get to the ER. Can you tell a few things went awry? At least our pictures are beautiful!

  8. Laura says:

Can you check the link to the dress? I can’t get it to work. Or list the brand? Thanks!

How funny! I just finished Matchmaking for Beginners a few weeks ago. I never thought it was a literary masterpiece, but the more I think about it, yeah, it was pretty not great. I do wish I could inherit a brownstone though.

The main character just rubbed me the wrong way. I kept thinking the character would develop, but it’s one of the few books that I ever put down and decided not to finish.

Congrats again on the wedding! I actually love the story about the license- I think it will be a story your family will be telling for years. You’ll laugh about it eventually!!

I have friends who live in the metro Boston area and were married in Madrid (where the bride has lots of family). They tried for months to jump through all the paperwork hoops so that their ceremony in Madrid would result in them being legally married in the US. After too many trips to the Consulate, he gave up. 5 months after their beautiful Madrid wedding ceremony, they finally got around to it. They found a JOP and went to her house to be legally married, walked in, and were overwhelmed by the smell of…..POOP. Her septic tank had backed up, and she had candles burning in an attempt to mask the smell, but they were no match. In the end, they were married. 5 months after they were “married”, in a house that reeked of poop, just the two of them and one complete stranger who they paid to be there…and they have a story that now cracks them up to think about.

Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches, and I’m pretty sure that’s actually one of the secrets to a great marriage!

I got the AT green suit yesterday. I was just going to get the jacket, but then tried on the pants and really love it. I’m so excited – thanks for the recommendation!

  13. JeSs says:

Thank you for the book recommendation! I’m 1/3 of the way through it and enjoying it immensely.
