Saw It On Social: Billie Razors

Jul 10, 2019

Have you ever been unable to escape a song?  You get in the car, it’s on.  You go to a restaurant, it’s on.  Suddenly, it’s chorus is in television commercials and Instagram stories.  And you’re just like, “Seriously?! Why am I being haunted by 21 Pilots?!”

That’s how the Billie razor advertisements were for me.  They were on every social channel, every blog, and in every magazine.  I couldn’t turn on my phone without running into their body-conscious, hipster models.  The.ads.were.everywhere.

And then, just when I thought I’d escaped, and Billie had been replaced by P.Volve ads, readers started asking for a Billie review.  Their feeds had clearly been overtaken as well.  And who am I to deny you ladies the unbiased, unsponsored reviews you ask for?

Billie brands itself as a female-focused beauty brand, creating razors for women in a male-dominated world.  Their goal is to make razors that don’t cost more just because we’re women (hello, pink tax).  And their ads are filled with women of different ethnicities and body types, many with visible body hair, which for those of us who grew up in the 90s is a little jarring, but I get the feminist angle of showing a woman with a less-than-trim bikini area, even if it makes me double take.

According to their website, their blades are sharper and their handle ergonomically designed to give women a closer, smoother shave then you would get with the average razor off of the shelf.

The razor subscription service also aims to prevent you from ever running out of fresh blades.  A Billie subscription starts at $9 + shipping, but you can add other items like shaving cream and lotion.

When you order from Billie’s, you choose your handle color from a handful of choices.  The razor-handle felt heavier than the Venus razors that I usually buy.  The nicest thing I can say about the razor is that it felt good in my hand, so the ergonomics are as good as promised.   It also glides across the skin with a smoothness that my other razor couldn’t match.

As for the smoother shave I was promised, my legs felt slightly smoother the first day.  They were also softer to the touch, but the shave didn’t seem to last longer.  I still felt the need to shave on day three like usual.

Blade delivery is nice if you always seem to forget them at the store (raises hand).  The shaving cream was really lovely, very moisturizing.  Shaving cream isn’t a must-buy for me, but this one could make me a believer.

The small triangle in the photo is a magnet that allows the handle to attach to your shower wall, which is certainly convenient.  Two readers complained that keeping the razor in the shower resulted in rusted blades, but I didn’t experience this issue over the two weeks I used the razor.

Bottom line, it’s a nice razor, but the mind-blowing results some bloggers experienced didn’t fully materialize.  I would buy the Billie again, mostly because having blades delivered is nice, and that shaving cream was pretty great.  Mostly, I liked Billie’s ethos and marketing, so I’d re-buy to also support that mission.

I purchased this Billie kit, like all Saw It On Social products, with my own cash and used it for two weeks.  I enjoyed the razor enough to put up an affiliate link to the Billie website, so if you buy it through those links, I will earn a small commission.

I picked up the Flamingo brand razor at Target and love it!

I hate paying for pricey razors, but none of the other brands could really replace my Venus Embrace, until Billie came out. It’s not revolutionary or anything, but it’s five blades with a moisture strip, and waaaaay cheaper than my usual blades. I don’t bother with shaving cream. I just lather up with my body wash, and it works just as well as the Venus Embrace. I do really like that triangle sticky though, and it is cute. I also appreciate that the packaging is pretty minimal. I’m intrigued with the Flamingo razor at Target, but I’m not going to toss a perfectly good razor just to try another.

I just picked up the razor, primarily for the subscription model. I always forget to purchase razors so this should be helpful. Glad it was a solid choice!

I’ve been thinking about Billie but have been afraid to pull the trigger. I bought the Flamingo razor and wax strips before they were sold at Target and hated them both. The wax strips didn’t work and left waxy pieces on my skin. The razor head itself is huge, there’s close to a half inch of plastic on the top that seemed to be serving no purpose.

    • Anna says:

These have a large-ish head because they have the moisture strip, but I’ve found that’s pretty key for me to get a smooth shave without shaving cream.

    • Erica says:

I second the dislike of Flamingo. Looked cute, but the blade rusted in about two weeks and I missed the moisture strip from my Venus. Maybe I’ll try Billie if it has the moisture strip, because Venus is crazy expensive.

  5. RR says:

I’ve been using Billie for close to a year and really like it. It’s exactly what you said–it’s not revolutionary, but it’s easy and cost effective and works every bit as well as the competition.

  6. Sam says:

I buy razors from Dollar Shave Club. $7 (& free shipping) for 4 blades, delivered to my house, and they work. I rarely use any kind of shave gel/cream/lotion and get a great shave, even under my arms. Their other products are geared toward men but I don’t need them anyway.

    • Katie says:

Same. I love Dollar Shave club because my husband and I can use it together. I thought about trying Billie but my husband doesn’t want to use that on his face so i’d rather buy a product that is essentially unisex. Not to mention super cheap, good quality and on subscription, i never worry about it!

  7. Jules says:

Am I the only one using those three dollar BIC plastic razors? There’s like ten per pack, haha. They have always been my go-to since I was a broke college student. It’s been working well for 15 years.

    • Ashley says:

I like the Gilette Simply Venus Triple Blade Disposable (something like ~$5 for a 4-pack) – been my go-to for longer than I can remember.

  8. SC says:

I did it — I just purchased a starter kit. Right now I use the Gillette Venus and the blades are always the most expensive item in my Walgreen’s basket! My SO uses a safety razor and the blades for that are SO inexpensive (100 blades for $8! Highway robbery, I say!), but the thought of that thing on my bony ankles terrifies me.

  9. Sarah says:

I bought myself a safety razor about a year ago. I was tired of paying too much for razors that then had to be trashed. The safety razors take a little getting used to (you can’t do the crazy rushed shave minutes before you’re headed out the door), but I love that now I pay CENTS for a blade and I’m not creating needless trash.

  10. Joelle Brodeur says:

I used Venus razors for years but it was never love. I always got razor burn and irritation so I seldom shaved. I saw Billie ads again and decided to try it. For me, it made a huge difference using Billie. I not only got a closer shave, but it was less effort to use and I didn’t get any discomfort at all.

Venus razor refills are crazy expensive for something and I am happy to ditch them in favor of Billie. Saving money is one thing but not ripping my skin to shreds while shaving is worth the switch.

  11. Dutch says:

Razors are good but the commercials cause me to change the channel if I’m watching something. They totally annoy me. Yes I get we have body hair.i also get hemorrhoids, that doesnt mean I want to see it on T.V.
