Saw it on Social: Minted Stationery

Jun 10, 2019

I’ve been buying art from Minted for years.  Their curated, limited-run prints and photographs created by independent artists are my favorite.  So when it came time to order Save the Date cards for our wedding in September, I was excited to give them a try.

This winter was crazy busy.  So finding the time to design invitations and a suite of paper products for the wedding was not something I could find effort for.  But my father, god bless him (and the rest of us for putting up with him), was getting antsy about sending out Save the Dates.

Minted has thousands of Save the Date cards to choose from.  Many have matching invitations, wedding websites, and custom envelopes.  Because I’m planning to do a custom invitation, I wanted to choose something simple that would match whatever I chose in the future.

These Ampersand Gold Foil Invitations were right up my alley.  Simple, elegant, could match anything.

Retail price was $199 for 75 Save the Dates ($248 for $100).  I added information on the back about the wedding website, and that cost another $29.  The custom-printed stamps cost $136, postage included.  I also got to choose a different envelope design from another suite (but I sent them all out, so the envelope is not pictured.

Minted offers a lot of discounts and promos to lower the cost.  With 25% off, shipping, and tax, the total cost was under-$350.

By far, the best things about ordering from Minted were 1) they pre-print the addresses on the envelopes (praise b!), and 2) I could order the stamps with them.  This saved a lot of time and hassle.

I was very happy with the look and quality of the Save the Dates.  They had good weight on Minted’s signature paper.  The shipping was fast, and they took only 20-minutes to stuff and stamp.  (Those Hill-Intern mail stuffing skills came in really handy!)

While I am still planning to do a custom invitation, I’m working to produce one that will work well with another Minted suite.  The reason?  They have menu cards, place cards, programs, and the like already designed.  Coordinating with an existing product line will save me money and time.

Where did you get your save the dates?  Or what is the best wedding invitation you’ve ever received?  Last month, I got one via text.  It was a graphic sent by blast message, and you clicked ‘yes’ to RSVP.  Convenient, though not quite what I was looking for.

Also used Minted, and got a great price through their MintedMore program my best friend uses. Also used them for our thank you notes- the free addressing feature is truly a game changer. Like you, we did a custom invitation. However, I used Zazzle for our custom postage and encountered a lot of issues (I think theirs was more customizable than Minted at that time- they did make it right by giving me a deep discount, however my invitations went out around 7 weeks out rather than 8, and I had to stuff them all myself inside of 48 hours, rather than having my now husband help me gradually over a week and weekend- remember, you can’t pre-stuff without postage for the RSVP…). Congratulations again on your wedding!

  2. Jules says:

We personally called and invited people. We didn’t send out a single card until the thank you cards.
A friend who recently got married did the same. It’s old school and I like it and it’s personal and intimate.

  3. Meghan says:

We got everything through Minted, and loved it, except for the custom postage. With the RSVP card and RSVP envelope included, the invite was slightly overweight, and the postage was not sufficient. We ended up having to add an extra stamp to all of our invites. The woman at the Post Office told me they have a huge issue with Minted and it happens all the time, particularly around the holidays with holiday cards. That being said, everything was beautiful and arrived even sooner than they said it would.

  4. Laura says:

I don’t remember who I used for the STD but for the invites I used Typecase Industries http://typecaseindustries.com/gallery, a small, women-owned and operated print shop in DC. They were lovely, surprisingly reasonable in price, and worked with me to design my invitations from scratch to a green and gold art nouveau theme. Also, since I live on the west coast, everything was done remotely (although if you are local you can go to their offices in person).

  5. Clare says:

I used minted for my save the dates too..However for our invitations I wanted to do extras which if I did them on Minted would have been crazy expensive(menus, rsvp cards and envelopes, info card, programs, lined envelope, thicker card stock). I ended up purchasing an electronic design from etsy, which also included an envelope template.I worked with the artist and we were able to come up with exactly what I was looking for. I was terrified it would be a nightmare to do the envelopes, but it totally wasn’t. it took about 30 minutes of trial and error to position it correctly on the envelopes for addresses but for me, that extra time was well worth the savings overall. It was so easy that I now use a template envelopes for everything I send!

  6. Alison says:

Vistaprint! I had great luck with VP for everything for our wedding. We did save the date postcards to save on postage and then used one of their coordinating lines for our invites/envelopes/info cards.

  7. Michelle says:

I used Minted for all my wedding pieces – save the dates, invitations, menu cards, place cards, etc. They are wonderful to work with but more importantly I just love their designs. Minted is my go to for all the cards I send out (baby announcements, holiday cards, birthday invitations, etc.) They are definitely more expensive than others but I find it so worth it. Plus the fact that they address the envelopes for me is a life saver – and totally free!!! (I have a return address stamp I use to stamp all the envelopes as Minted charges for this). Love Minted so much!

  8. s says:

omg – i have fallen out of touch with the blog world so i had no idea you are tying the knot – congrats!! i am so glad i started reading your blog again, LOL.

  9. Lacey says:

I used Zazzle for STDs. They were great and I didn’t have any issues. I cannot remember who I used for invitations, but I did have some problems there (it was not minted). One thing that I found to be helpful was to put some sort of tracking device on the RSVPs. You wouldn’t believe how many you get back that states how many will attend, but with no names! I used numbers on the back with a corresponding number in a spreadsheet next to the guests name. Saved me some pain.

    • Jennifer P says:

I second the tracking of RSVPs! We added number to the back of them as well and it was so helpful. So many people forget to add their name on the appropriate line…

  10. Erica says:

I used minted for STD and was also very pleased with the product. For all other paper items (invitation suite, menus, escort cards, programs) I used Nicola Black, a designer who I found thru a Pinterest binge and just kept going back to those images because I loved her designs. She’s based out of NJ, and while I (and our wedding) was located in DC, Nicola was an absolute breeze to work with. We were thrilled with the way everything looked…I would highly recommend her if looking for a custom job!

  11. Sof says:

I skipped save the dates. We had a short engagement (4.5 months) so it didn’t make much sense. We sent invites instead. Worked for us since it was a small wedding (<70) of almost entirely family, so we used the family grapevine to give people a head up.

    • Laura says:

Did the same thing for our small wedding of 30 people. No STD but did send a formal invitation. I love paper goods though so it mattered to me that they were pretty.

  12. MAT says:

I ordered my save the dates from zazzle. They were classic but informal. But then I went very formal for my invitations (which felt appropriate for a black tie wedding). We did a Crane’s engraved invitation suite with a classic envelope liner, and hand calligraphied addresses. It’s old fashioned, yes, but a tradition I still enjoy. There’s something about getting an envelope in the mail and instantly knowing it’s for a wedding (Size, weight, calligraphy). We also have the engraved copper plates as a memento.

  13. E says:

I wanted to badly to use Minted for my invitations, but I had the hardest time trying to fit what I wanted with their templates – especially when it came to the wording. I ended up using a custom printer and was so happy that I could more easily mix and match fonts and paper and trust a professional to line up margins, etc.

    • Janine says:

We used Minted and worked with one of their designers to customize one of the templates a bit – I think the details card. It wasn’t completely painless, but it worked out well. I thought Minted was great for the ease of choosing coordinating invitations, tablecards, etc., and creating a cohesive look.

  14. SC says:

I especially love STD cards with pictures so I’m glad yours has one! I used to save the actual invitations, but now I just keep the STD cards/magnets on the fridge as a nice memento of the occasion.

  15. CAROLINE says:

I used Minted for save the dates (magnets) and invites and while they were beautiful, they really messed up cutting the STDs. The edges were messed up on the first 25 I ordered and they replaced them for free, but many of the replacements had the exact same issue. Luckily I didn’t need all 25 (that was the minimum order number) and there were enough that looked ok enough to send. But it was frustrating after having paid so much for them. Apparently not frustrating enough for me to abandon my invite design though, which arrived just fine.

    • Laura says:

That’s awful! I highly recommend giving them that feedback. They are a great company. I had a super minor issue with an order and they sent me an apology card with a $100 no strings attached giftcard on it. It was super generous.

  16. Katie says:

Minted is great! The ability to save the addresses in your account is KEY. We’ve gone back to Minted for holiday cards because of that feature as well. After I had addressed thank you cards in a wedding year, the only reason we got holiday cards out is because of Minted’s ability to have a pre- addressed envelopes. 🙂 Also they’re an Ebates participant.

  17. Christine says:

I’m wedding planning as well right now, although for next September. I think we’ll be going with Zazzle for everything (we wanted save the dates that were 100% customizable for our longer names, and they have some invitation suites that are perfect for our wedding colors), but I always adore the Minted invitations. I hope the rest of your wedding preparations are going well, Abra!

  18. Lauren says:

We went with a couple of custom water color peices from an etsy designer (https://www.etsy.com/shop/BlushandBloomArt) she did an incredible job for $150. Lucky for me one of my bridesmaids is a talented designer so she did the text/font for the invite and my planner helped me work with a wholesale printer that did beautiful work (http://www.copperwillow.com/). Wish I could share photos here!

Also a heads up, you can create custom stamps on https://photo.stamps.com/Store/?source=si10985886 too! I think they’re slightly cheaper than Minted and came out beautifully. One last tip, we got some odds & ends (bags for petals and custom napkins) at https://www.foryourparty.com/ and were happy with the results, too.

  19. Mary G. says:

What happened to your custom map save the Dates from The Map Chick?

  20. Janine says:

We used a combination of Minted and Vistaprint. Minted for the invitation and RSVP card, and Vistaprint for the rest (rehearsal dinner inserts, placecards, menus, save the dates). We were able to replicate the specific graphic from the Minted invite and used it in Vistaprint for everything else. We opted not to do personalized postage and just went down to the post office and chose pretty stamps.

  21. Leila says:

    Hi Abra –

Congratulations on your engagement! I’m getting married on June 22nd, and did all of my stationary, including custom work, through Minted.com. I’m very happy with everything we received and with the customer service we received during the customization process. Our Save the Dates were custom. I worked with a designer through their site and the ability to proof and make changes was very user-friendly and smooth. We picked one of their designs for our invitations, envelopes, customized our stamps, and used one of our coupons to make Happy New Year cards at a fraction of what others would have charged. They also worked with me to created customized table cards (with numbers, names, and quotes) for the tables at our reception. Minted has my enthusiastic recommendation! Best of luck to you and Kyle!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
