The Weekly Edit: Blurred Vision

Jun 5, 2019

This week is a blur.  Three days of packed work events, a never-ending to-do list, and tomorrow, I fly to D.C..  I keep telling myself that I just need to make it until Monday, but that feels like a fallacy.

So let’s just skip the usual introduction and get straight to what I loved this week.

I need more fun in my life.  And the second I spotted these Sam Edelman Rumi silk slippers, I knew I’d found my hot pink gateway drug to a summer of brighter living.   They feel like the kind of shoes that you can never have a bad day while wearing.

Love the pink but not the style?  ASOS has a $23 pointed toe flat.  I also love these hot pink pumps from Dillard’s.

It’s always a shame when you discover a show late in the season that’s already on the cancellation list.  But that is what happened with The Enemy Within.

This is the perfect binge-weekend show.  It has an interesting plot, a good cast, and enough twists to keep you watching.  I thought Jennifer Carpenter was very convincing as a crafty CIA-operative turned traitor.  13-episodes, no filler, and enough of a closed loop that you don’t need a second season to feel satisfied.

Have I ever told you that I love to vacuum?  I mean love it.  I find it calming in a way I can’t quite describe. Just quietly bringing order to chaos.

This handheld vacuum from Dyson is a life changer.  I use it to clean up after meals.  It’s perfect for vacuuming hair off the bathroom floor.  And it’s a lifesaver for our hardwood floors which don’t hide the dirt as well as I would like.  It’s worth every penny of the $299.  I don’t even need my full-size Dyson anymore.

I downloaded From the Corner of the Oval today for my trip.  It tells the story of a young woman who lands a job as a presidential stenographer, following the President wherever he goes.  Just the kind of easy, lighthearted read I need right now.

It’s the June Book Pick for Girl’s Night In Club.  So I’m excited to finish a GNI book before the discussion and meetups begin.

I have those shoes and they’re the perfect dressy flat. I wore them nonstop during my last trimester, and plan to continue wearing them all summer long.
‘From The Corner Of The Oval’ was one of my favorite reads of 2018. Enjoy it.

  2. Crystal says:

Love the shoes — wish the magenta ones were available in sizes larger than 6. 🙁

  3. Kai says:

Such a good show, didn’t realize it was being cancelled.

I have that dyson and we use it all the time. My husband said that it is the best gift he’s ever received. My 1 year old is terrified of full-sized dyson, but loves that one. He is constantly trying to take it off the charger and chasing it when we vacuum. Bonus that is pink and not just another boring black vacuum.

    • A says:

I have the v6 version of that vacuum and my 2 year old is still terrified by it, but it is amazing. We use it almost every night since the toddler is a crumb factory and likes to eat on the run.

    • Anna says:

My parents (with four cats) have this vacuum and it’s amazing. If I wasn’t planning to move cross country, I’d have one by now. Definitely planning to ask for one when I’m settled (my mom is actually excited to get it for me and had offered multiple times!).

    • Shana says:

Any comment on the V10 vs V7? IMO, sometimes the newer versions aren’t actually better.

      • R says:

I believe the Wirecutter article on cordless stick vacuums discusses the difference between the Dyson models and which are most cost effective.

I was ready to pull the trigger on the Dyson but went with Wirecutter’s runner-up pick, the Shark IonFlex DuoClean Cordless and I LOVE it. I got it on an insane sale for under $150 and its “stick” folds in half, so I can store it in the awkward short closet in my apartment. Plus, the battery lasts forever (and you can buy extras if you have a large house to clean).

  4. Em says:

I have the older version of that Dyson and though the battery only lasts 15 minutes per charge, it’s still my favorite vacuum ever. We have a cat and though he’s afraid of it, it does a great job with his fur and occasional kitty litter mess.

I bought it in 2015 mislabeled at Target for MUCH lower than normal retail. Best deal ever. I keep telling myself I’ll upgrade to the new version with the longer battery life when it breaks, but it’s still going strong!

  5. MC says:

Belk has an almost exact dupe of the Sam Edleman for $24. One left in 7.5! https://www.belk.com/p/crown-ivy-mayla-mules/2900841T19102CI.html

  6. Sarah says:

Just finished From the Corner of the Oval and loved it. Based on reality enough to hear what it’s like to actually work for the President, fictionalized enough that it read like a juicy summer read. So much fun.

    • Anna says:

I just checked it out from the library yesterday after seeing it here and haven’t put it down! It’s pretty well-written (though I’ve just come off a streak of pretty cheesy historical novels) and definitely brought me back to the excitement of peak-Obama DC. I was on the Hill at that time, so it was kind of fun to look back at certain milestones from the other side, and while I never worked in the White House, it definitely feels accurate enough. I’m sure anyone who’s been a 20-something in DC during the last decade either is or knows people just like the characters in the book.

  7. GF says:

echoing the other commenters who loved “from the corner of the oval” — i also loved it!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
