State of the Blog: A Programming Note

Apr 10, 2019

Today is Day 75 of our 90 day legislative session.  Everything is on fire — either the bills are moving fast and furious, or they are burned to ash.  Congress, even with all its end-of-year bluster, has nothing like this.  Tonight, I had Diet Coke for dinner (Feisty Cherry flavor) because I was too tired to cook food…or eat food for that matter.

It was also extraordinarily upsetting day because of something that happened to me at work.  But we will talk about that next week. #staytuned

All of this is to say, I don’t know how many posts will get written this week.  A few, for sure, but not as many as usual.  Monday was already a wash.  If I keep finishing work after 10:00PM, other days might be as well.

Please be patient while I fight through the last days of the session.  I have a handful of bills that I am passionately working on, and I may not be able to spare the time to write about fashion this week.

xx, Abra

Your health, both mental and physical, are most important. Take care of yourself!

  3. Lauren says:

Keep up the good work of governance, and we will be here when you can breathe again! Best of luck getting through — we are all rooting for you!

  4. pomm says:

Keep doing what you’re doing! We understand and support you! We’re here when you’re ready for us…and good luck with the rest of the session.

  5. SC says:

    Hang in the there, girl.

  6. Liz says:

As someone who used to work in a state legislature, I know what an insanely busy sleep-deprived adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster of a time the final week or two of Session can be. Sine Die will get here soon enough, and I hope the bills you’ve been working on make their way to the Governor’s desk!!

p.s. If you can, I would suggest taking off a day or two completely (seriously, even if its just the weekend to just sleep as much as you can and only do mindless tasks) before doing any kind of hotwash or more detailed analysis of how Session and your projects went.

  7. J says:

Do what you need to do. We’ll be here when you come back. In the meantime, try to put something better into your system than pop.

  8. Meghan says:

Good luck Abra. As others have said, hang in there – we’re rooting for you. I hope whatever happened to you today works itself out too.

  9. cara says:

Put yourself first, we all can wait. Thank you for making a positive difference!!!

  10. Emily says:

Thanks for the transparency and keep up the good work!! We’ll miss you but be okay 🙂 Self care is definitely the most important.

  11. Jenn says:

Fashion can wait! Thank you for your hard work on those bills. Keep fighting the good fight!

  12. Amanda says:

This right here is why I keep coming back to the blog. You set and help us manage expectations which I think helps me do the same in my own life. I look forward to your posts, but definitely want you to take care of yourself!!

  13. desigirl says:

    Abra,

This is why I read your blog – the fact that you give us an unfiltered glance into your life!

  14. Nicole says:

Best wishes for the home stretch of the session, Abra!

  15. Sarah says:

Good luck getting through the end of session! You got this!

  16. Not Rob Schneider says:

+ 1 million to everything everyone already posted

I will add my own trademark line: You can do it!

  17. Sierra Delta says:

Abra, PLEASE don’t apologize! Life happens to all of us, and things regularly go kablooey (technical term), no matter how prepared we think we are ahead of time. If you need to take a break, even for the duration of the legislative session, we’re fine with that. Your health and sanity matter to us, and we don’t want you to push yourself beyond your limits just to entice us with strappy sandals and floaty summer dresses every day. You’ve got a lot going on in your life right now (serious understatement), so put your oxygen mask on first — we’re ALL in for a bumpy flight for the next couple of years, so let’s take virtual care of each other. . .

    • LP says:

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said but just wanted to add that I’m so happy Abra DIDN’T actually say the words “I’m sorry.” None of us owe anyone an apology for choosing self care. I really struggle with this and just wanted to remind all of you amazing ladies that it’s okay for all of us to do what we need to do to take care of ourselves – guilt free.

  18. AG says:

Welcome to the life of a state legislative staffer! I am in my 7th session and every year its different (but the same). Take the time you need before getting back to the blog. At two weeks out you’re still in the marathon, not the sprint stage. The last 72 hours is always the worst. I am usually sleeping in my office those last couple nights – usually we are finishing conference committee at 2am and then presenting the bill on the floor at 6am.

  19. ST says:

Hang in there — your readers have you back! We will wait 🙂

Frankly, I think it is amazing that you have kept up your posting for as long as you have during the legislative session. Take care of yourself! xoxo

  20. Melissa says:

Keep up the amazing work for the very lucky people of Montana. You’ve got this!

  21. Tina says:

No worries, take care of you first. Breathe (whoo saa) all is temporary. Sending peaceful energy and strength

  22. Lidia says:

You can see the fiinish line.
You’ve got this and we will be here. Stay strong and be the best you can be!

  23. Shelley says:

Keep up the good fight. All your amazing fashion insights will wait for another day.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
