The Edition: No. 70

Feb 1, 2019

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.  — a paraphrase from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Learned. Kindness is a skill.  It must be taught.

Worked. This $40 Maggy London navy dress is a MUST for the office. So chic.

Hustled. Why are young people pretending to love 18-hour days that benefit their bosses and hurt them?

Brightened. Banana’s green and yellow sweaters feel like winter, but look like spring.

Sliced. Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband’s penis after he raped her.  But her story of domestic abuse was overshadowed when her response went 1990s-viral.

Smoothed. This $3 charcoal mask from Ulta is the best for softer skin.

Rewarded. Women are more aggressive about asking for a raise when talking to a female boss.

Walked. These $40 red flats from DSW are my current favorite shoe.

Postponed. Could student loans be why more women are choosing to put off motherhood?

Tipped. I grabbed Deborah Lippmann’s flawless Respect Red for Valentine’s Day nails.

Nailed. How to give yourself a flawless home manicure.

Today, my Father turns 64-years-old.  Seven years ago, when he was battling cancer, I didn’t know how many more birthdays he would celebrate or milestones he would see.

So even though I know he hates birthdays and is pretty grumpy about life in general these days, I wanted to wish him a Happy Birthday.  I hope he will see another year as a blessing, and remember that we’re all glad he’s still here with us.  Even when he’s being a giant pain.

I’m about confused by the Kindness Is a Skill article. It seems to have nothing to do with kindness but is more about how to argue well in the workplace. Am I missing something?

The Lorena Bobbit story was fascinating. It’s certainly difficult to think about how people’s stories are often buried by the media and people’s perception.

  2. Monica T says:

The Lorena piece is interesting, and sad. I’m glad she has moved on with her life, how hurtful that her pain became a punchline.

I feel like the Kindness article is satire…but I’m not sure why?

  3. Jen says:

Maggie London dress PURCHASED – i sized up because sometimes my upper arm (muscles?) are larger than manufacturers want them to be, I can always tailor down.

  4. bn says:

Have you worn the Rowland Flat all day yet? Is it comfortable? Is there any arch support? Thanks, as always, for suggesting beautiful shoes!

    • Belle says:

Six hours was the max so far. It needs a bit of breaking in. But I would say it’s an 8 for comfort. Not as much arch support as some will need, but fine for me.

  5. Pam says:

love the message about/to your dad. Mine had a series of strokes between thanksgiving and christmas and its been rough, but like you – we are grateful he is still around.

  6. Carol says:

Happy birthday and extra awesome post diagnosis/treatment years. Cancer is no match for love.

  7. Kate says:

Love the Maggie London dress. Would you do black tights/black shoes with it, or save it for spring? I always think my dark navy work dresses and black tights look odd together.

  8. TarYn says:

My dad’s birthday is the day after your dad’s – is yours a football fan? We always loved celebrating my dad’s birthday with a super bowl party! He also battled cancer at 57, so we have a very similar story. I wish your dad a happy birthday and many, many more!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
