The Weekly Edit: Eliminating Complications

Oct 12, 2018

Some weeks, you just need the simple things.  Easy dinners.  Comfortable clothing.  A walk with your dog. There’s just no extra for complications.

For a little over a year, I’ve been fighting a particularly nasty bout of depression.  And for most of the summer, I was losing.  It’s only in the past month that I’ve started to feel like I’m turning a corner, but it’s fragile.

So this week was all about recovering from the stresses of the past few weeks.  I’ve been cleaning, cooking meals with Kyle at home, and generally laying low.  Here’s a recap.

Target’s A New Day line is one of my favorite places to pick up easy pieces.  I bought these collapsible back loafers to wear with jeans, and they’re pretty fabulous.  This bishop-sleeve sweater is also on order, because, well, look at it.  And if you are looking for a work-appropriate backpack, try their double-zip backpack.  It’s kind of chic.

Kyle does most of the cooking in our house.  What can I say?  He enjoys it.  I don’t.  But occasionally, I take dinner off of his plate.

This week, this chicken tikka masala was on order.  And since I can make it in my Instant Pot and buy some Trader Joe’s microwavable rice, it’s the easiest dinner ever.  Just prep the chicken the night before, and you’ll have a delicious dinner in less than 30-minutes.

Is your house tied up in a tangle of cords and wires?  Mine is.  I’m constantly hiding away or tripping over phone chargers, laptop cables and other wires.  This week, I decided this was a scourge that could not continue.

I bought these Cable Clips from Amazon to secure the cables for our “beside the bed” chargers to the nightstands.  Then, I picked up some USB equipped socket covers.  Because, while I may not be able to live without these little white cords, that doesn’t mean they need to take over my life.

Everyone could use more clarity.  Sometimes, focusing your mind can really help strengthen your defenses against negative, depressive thoughts.  Zenify is a great app for learning to calm your mind, focus your thoughts and center yourself.  I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks, and while it took me a while to start trusting the process, I feel like it’s helping.

Glad to feel you may have turned a corner, Belle. Thanks for always being so authentic in this space. Sending you good wishes!

Thanks for being open about your struggles with depression. Stigma is a huge problem when it comes to mental illness, even though SO many families have loved ones that struggle with it. The only way to fight stigma is to talk about it. Thanks for using your platform and voice to do just that!

  3. Denise says:

As always, I appreciate your honesty regarding your struggle with depression. As women it’s hard to admit that we’re not always feeling like the supermom / boss lady / HBIC. Glad you are taking care of yourself!

  4. Em says:

Perfect timing with the backpack! I’ve been looking high and low for a black nylon/leather backpack w/ double handles on top and gold hardware. Tumi did one a few season back that fit the bill but I can’t justify dropping $400 on something I’m not sure I’ll love; $40 is way more comfortable. Happy you’re feeling better too!

  5. Martie says:

So glad to hear things are improving! You are such a survivor, and your tenacity really is inspiring. This is a lifelong battle, to be sure. But it is a battle well worth fighting, and you are not alone.Cheers! 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

  6. Kathleen Lisson says:

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better!

  7. Jenn says:

Thank you for your honesty. I’ve been going through a rough patch myself. It’s good to know that we aren’t alone, and I hope that things start looking brighter for you soon. Nothing lasts forever, good or bad. We’ll get through this!

My dark under eye circles have been the bane of my existence since I was 12. Is the cause lack of sleep? Dehydration? Sinus issues? Stress? Who the hell knows. But there they are, every day, telling the world that I am an exhausted working Mom.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
