The Weekly Edit: A Fall from Grace

Sep 28, 2018

Yesterday, I was picking up our smallest dog, Sophie, when something awful happened.  She half-jumped, half-fell from my arms.  It was terrifying.

Sophie has had a hard-knock life, and is tough as nails, so to hear her scream like she was dying, woof.  Luckily, Kyle stepped in a calmed her down enough I could take her to the veterinarian.  Poor little babe dislocated her patella.  She still won’t put any weight on it.  And as grateful as I am that it isn’t a broken bone, I still feel like a terrible pup parent.

Guess Sophie is going to get the princess-treatment for a while.  If you need me, I’ll be hand-feeding a dog and giving her belly rubs until further notice.

It’s chilly in Washington state.  During the day, no problem.  Taking the dogs outside after the sun goes down, so cold.

I bought this Three Dots Fleece Jacket and I am in love with it.  It looks much nicer than what it is, a fancy sweatshirt.  I wear it over my leggings and tees, or with jeans a nice shirt on the weekends.  Very cozy.

How do leaders handle crisis?  What molds their actions and their thinking?  “Leadership in Turbulent Times” covers several presidents as they dealt with historic crises during their time in office.  Because sometimes, you just want to read something that reminds you that this isn’t the first generation to go through chaotic political times.

Skillet Chicken with Grapes and Caramelized Onions is the kind of dish that looks fancy and difficult to prepare, but isn’t.  It has this warm, inviting flavor that’s perfect for fall.  It’s also the perfect dish to serve with those grapes you promised you’d eat, but are now hours away from spoiling.  Not that I’ve ever done that.

To make this recipe, you need a cast iron skillet.  If you don’t have time to season a new cast iron skillet, buy one from Lodge that comes pre-seasoned.  Lodge is the only brand of cast-iron my family buys.  Made in Tennessee, and fantastic for everything.

More true crime.  I know, a total cliche.  But the In the Dark podcast follows the case of Curtis Flowers, a man who was tried for the same series of murders six times in 21 years.  Yes, six times.  His first five trials all resulted in mistrials and hung juries.  His sixth put him on death row.  But is he really guilty?

I needed a new pair of leopard flats, and after much searching, decided on these Sam Edelman Rodney Flats.  They’re fairly comfortable.  Suitable for a moderate amount of walking, but not commuting.  And they come in a ton of colors, so if you’re looking for a sleek flat shoe, give these a look.

My small dog, Agnes, did that years ago as a puppy. It was awfully sad, but she’s A-OK and has been ever since. Hugs, lady. Those lil pups can really give you a scare…it’s your heartbeat at your feet!

    • Belle says:

Now it looks like she needs surgery. And of course, a week before she gets her first real yard to play in. I’m the worst pup parent ever.

      • BV says:

Aw man that stinks! I hope it goes amazingly well and then she can enjoy the yard thereafter!

      • Jill says:

Absolutely not your fault. It happens. My mom’s teacup Yorkie jumped from her purse and broke a leg. First time ever after ages of sitting in the purse. Dogs are unpredictable, even little, helpless-seeming dogs. Don’t be hard on yourself.

      • Pompom says:

Lots of love to Sophie and her humans (and Avery of course). She’ll be bionic and better than ever!

  2. Laura says:

I LOVEEEEEEE In The Dark. Season one was thrilling/chilling too.

  3. Jess says:

When Atticus was a puppy, he did the same thing out of my arms, hitting our kitchen tile floor from the height of about 4 feet. He didn’t move. I was bawling sitting on the floor of the kitchen until he finally started to move. I think he must have had the wind knocked out of him. I woke up a few times that night to check on him and make sure that he was still okay. It was my first moment of mommy fear.

  4. Laura says:

Could you check the link to skillet chicken? Sounds delicious!

  5. C says:

Oh bless you – both Grace and you! These things happen and you are not a terrible dog mum – accidents happen with pups but I know how awful it makes you feel. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

  6. CT says:

I work for the LBJ Library and Doris Kearns Goodwin was here for an event last week promoting her new book. I wasn’t able to attend, but my coworkers who did said it was an interesting discussion. They’ve posted the event online if anyone’s interested in hearing from the author: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dEMuO5TSTQ
