The Weekly Edit: Let the Sunshine In

Jun 13, 2018

This week, I needed color and sugar and ruffles and laughs.  After the past few weeks, it seemed better to go looking for lightness than stay in hiding.  My efforts to find the happy weren’t always successful, but it was a good plan, nonetheless.  Because whether you’re having a great day or a meh one, who couldn’t use a little light?

Have you tried this Target line, A New Day?  I am really loving it.  The pieces are stylish, on-trend, and very unique.  I adore the fun, flirty yellow top ($23).  It would be so cute with a navy short, or go a little glam with a wide leg white pant.

This white, sheer blouse with a ruffle sleeve ($23) is also really cool.  It’s the kind of piece that looks more expensive than it is.  I would tuck it in to a high waist jean or a high waisted pencil skirt.  Just wear a camisole underneath, and I think it’s such a fun look.

Another great thing about A New Day?  The brand is inclusive.  So almost every piece comes in plus-size.

Now that I share a DVR with Kyle, my TV watching has radically changed, so I never get to watch any of the guilty pleasures that I used to.  (Rest in peace, CW Network.)  But I was looking for something to watch late night (hey, insomnia) and Younger popped up.

If you haven’t seen Younger, it’s about a 40-year-old woman who lies about her age to get back into the workforce after her divorce.  Hijinks ensue as she pretends to be 26 in a world of social media, Brooklyn hipsters, and cocktails.  It’s from the creator of Sex and the City, and the writing styles and one-liners are very reminiscent.  So if you’re looking for an easy, lighthearted show, this is a good one.

Caution though, it will make you wonder if book publishing is the career for you.

I hate fragrance.  I spend most of my time avoiding it.  Nothing will turn my off of a product faster than fragrance.  But there is one exception, I love fresh citrus scents.  The trouble is most companies produce citrus fragrances that are cloying, artificial and prickly.  Not, Williams Sonoma.

I don’t know if the folks at W&S have tiny elves juicing oranges to make these candles, soaps and oils, but they are phenomenal.  Same for the grapefruit and the Meyer lemon.  The products (from hand lotion to dish soap) are all free of parabens and most of the chemicals that other brands use.

Seriously, I put out my Sunny Orange essential oil diffuser and it just lifts my mood.  And makes me want to eat a whole bag of tangelos.  Some problems are unavoidable.

Love Younger! So happy that it and The Bold Type are back! I’d run out of shows to watch and was scraping the bottom of the barrel with some German and Turkish period shows.

  2. Have you tried Fresh’s “citron de vigne” scent? It’s citrus-y and perfect for summer!

  3. Christina Gorga says:

I love Williams & Sonoma scents as well. We keep a room spray of the Fleur de Sel scent in our bedroom. Clean smell without being overpowering.

  4. Rebecca says:

I love Younger – it’s one of my favorite shows! Interestingly, my husband just forwarded this article to me. I had no idea that Simon & Schuster had published “Marriage Vacation,” the book by Charles’s ex-wife that caused such a stir in season 4.

  5. Annie says:

Younger is the absolute best! Agree about The Bold Type, too! So good.

  6. Liza says:

Seeking out light and beauty is one of the best things you can do for yourself when you are down. I took myself to the DC botanical garden when I was low – it lifted my mood immensely. Another good place to soak in light and beauty? Florists/greenhouses/plant nurseries. They are my favorite place to go when I need a beauty infusion. Something about being in nature, surrounded by color and moisture and greenery lifts me. Keep going Belle!

The Find: An Affordable Work Dress

This winter was particularly hard on my psyche, on my self-esteem, and on my waistline. As we move into spring, I need to make a plan for how I am going to dress this additional weight over the months of work that it will likely take to shed it. So I was so glad to […]
