The death of Kate Spade has brought the discussion of suicide to the forefront.  I have fought depression for most of my life, and several years ago, struggled with thoughts of suicide.  It’s something I’ve written about before.

Sometimes you won’t know how deep a person’s depression is, but there are signs you can look for that signal they might be suicidal.  If someone close to you is having suicidal thoughts, this article is the best I’ve seen for how to help.  The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK [8255]) is there, not only for people who are suicidal, but for the people trying to help them.

We can tell those who are struggling that they are not alone.  But the best thing we can do is to check in with our loved ones, look for the warning signs, and do our best to support them.

Thank you so much for sharing about your struggle. The discussions surrounding Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain have all been expressing shock and sadness… and no one saying they too struggle. It’s felt extremely isolating. So thank you again.

I love that you are sharing the helpline for those in need. However, I think it’s important to note that their aren’t always warning signs. A lot of people consider suicide to be a choice with warning signs and intent. However, there are many like me with complicated mental health disorders that don’t want or plan to die but may have a psychotic episode when opening a window, or taking a bath, or any other potential dangerous activity. Those deaths are often not discussed because there is no logical reason for why they died. I’ve struggled with this all my life to the point of getting a service dog to keep me safe during those episodes or even alert me before they happen. But many like me don’t have the ability to get the appropriate medication or other treatment options and often slip under the radar. I guess my point is, reach out when you can but ALWAYS be kind. You never know what dark pain someone is hiding.

Sometimes there aren’t, but other times, I just don’t think people know what to look for. In your case, you’re absolutely right. I have a close friend who rammed her car into a bridge abutment. Just like you said, had an episode while driving. Luckily she was okay, and she no longer drives. There is no way to know what some folks are going through, but I think we can all be supportive if they choose to tell us. But it’s important to remember some people just don’t get it. I can talk to Kyle about my depression until I am blue in the face. He wants to understand, but he’s never felt it, so he can’t.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
