“I believe in luck: how else can you explain the success of those you dislike?” — Jean Cocteau

Starting Lineup. Cosmo’s essential tips for starting your own business. (Awesome.)

Chalk Line. Is the collar on this white skirt suit too much?

Boxscore. Female veterans are telling their stories and changing the narrative on war.

Call the Bullpen. This tie-waist dress from BR is a great piece.  I also like this boucle skirt and these machine washable trousers.

Perfect Game. How to pitch yourself to an employer.

Color Commentary. Loving these bright vases and deep blue serving bowl from Anthro.

Batting Cleanup. Are you washing your face correctly?

Game, Blouses. This Vince pin-tucked blouse and smocked Need Supply blouse are neutral, but better than basic.

Strength Training. Advice for a director who’s afraid to show weakness at work.

In the Pocket. The message on this pouch basically sums up my life.

Hall of Famer. Could Anna Wintour be leaving Vogue?

How do you feel about multiple ear piercings?  I just have one, but a few weeks ago, I started thinking about getting a second one.  No idea why this thought struck me, but it did.  Now, I can’t seem to shake it.  Maybe I’ve hit my rebellious pre-teen years 22 years late.

Do you have multiple ear piercings?  A nose piercing?  I thought that all of these things were off limits for lawyers, but I walked into a firm last month and almost half of the female lawyers had nose rings.  Couldn’t believe my eyes.  I guess that’s one of the differences being on the other coast.

Yes to multiple earrings! I have double piercings (actually from the rebellious early teens phase) that I still love. I wear simple, small diamond studs in them and then whatever other earrings I feel like for the first piercing. I’ve never felt that they were unprofessional in any of the offices I’ve worked in (government, on the hill, insurance or law) because I kept it small. I hope you’ll love them – the extra sparkle is so fun.

  2. Nora says:

I never had multiple piercings (thanks mom) until my mid-twenties during a high stress law school semester. Now I’m a lawyer in DC with three piercings on one of my ears and I don’t think anyone has ever even looked twice.

  3. rar says:

I’m a 2010 law school grad and am currently a partner at a midsize firm in Chicago (100ish attorneys). I’ve also worked in big law in NYC and Chi. I have multiple piercings but only wear earrings in one. I don’t have a nose ring, but have worked with colleagues that do. I DO have visible tattoos (with short sleeves) and I do wear “trendy” nail polish colors (although I have a dark mauve on currently, which I love!). No one cares.

  4. CM says:

I got second holes in my ears in high school and a cartilage piercing in college. I went to work in public accounting in DC in 2004 and let all but the 2 originals close up. About 9 months ago I started thinking about re-piercing my second holes, and I’m definitely doing it. I love the look of multiple earrings, and i don’t work in client services anymore. I think the cultural landscape has changed considerably in the last 15 years, and I don’t even look twice at nose piercings anymore.

  5. j says:

In addition to the standard single piercing in each lobe, I have a single cartilage stud in my left ear that I got in college and still weirdly love, eight years later. It’s nice because it hides easily under my hair in my fairly conservative office (though I don’t think it would be a big deal if it was showing), but I can also swap it out for something glitzy or edgy for special events when I wear my hair up.

It’s honestly pretty unexciting, but it excites me, so yay for the small things.

  6. Rachel says:

The Cosmo article was really interesting. I have no plans to start a business, but I love reading about new ideas.

One of our local public media stations has a great program that you can stream,
“Her Big Idea” about women entrepreneurs.

  7. Trisha Raines says:

i work at a big law firm and people have piercings, tattoos, etc. i have pink highlights and no one has given me a second look. i don’t think think it’s taboo anywhere.

  8. Maddy says:

“Game, Blouses” made me laugh out loud, and now I just want to go home and binge watch old Chapelle’s Show episodes.

  9. Niki says:

I have two holes in each ear, and a third on one side. I haven’t used the second or third holes in over 10 (maybe 15) years. Our dress code prohibits more than two earrings and facial jewelry/piercings (financial institution), but honestly, I am perhaps an old fuddy duddy and think it looks dated. But then again, what once was dated is now trendy! I can’t say I am particularly fashion forward LOL

  10. anna says:

I got a second hole in middle school and that was good enough for me. I was tempted to get a piercing in my upper ear, but just used an ear cuff instead (gosh was I cool). By middle of high school I had stopped wearing an earring in the second hole and only used it for heavy earrings (I have a deep-seated fear of saggy earlobes). The second holes have pretty much totally closed up by now, and I have no desire to open them up again or get anything else pierced. I’m not a fan of pain.

  11. Amanda says:

I have two piercings on my ear lobes and one cartilage piercing (tragus). I love them all, but usually stick to gold studs in them or small diamonds.

  12. Lily says:

I’m in love with the lapel on that suit and must see it in person!
    What a fun find!

  13. SM says:

I have two piercings in each ear and as my mother would say, “More places to wear diamonds!” so I say go for it.

    • Nicole says:

Ha! Came here to say that my mom got second piercings BECAUSE she got a pair of diamond studs that she wanted to wear all the time, but still wanted to be able to wear her other earrings. (I also have multiple piercings from my misspent youth, but I loved why she got hers in her adulthood.)

  14. Rosa says:

I have a second hole in one ear and a double nose ring (opposite sides) which I never change out – I keep two simple gold rings in them always. I like the extra ear hole for earrings that lose their match. But I work in a very casual field and mostly from home these days! When I used to work with immigrants and refugees I actually got a ton of compliments on my nose piercings from my clients.

  15. Addie says:

i’ve been thinking of getting a second ear piercing too!

  16. Lauren says:

So funny that you mention multiple ear piercings. I have 3 holes in each ear, but have only worn earrings in one for years now – I’ve been considering for awhile having at least the second re-pierced, they’ve closed up! This pictures is lovely!

  17. Wanda says:

I have two piercings on each earlobe but at this point in my life I only use my original, first piercings. The second ones now serve as reminders of my rebellious college years when I wanted piercings and tattoos and thought I was so cool (I wasn’t). I now work in the legal field and am in the courtroom everyday so I’ve gotten used to being more conservative. It’s fine because it really does suit me (no pun inteneded). However, I’ve been thinking about getting a Daith Piercing because I suffer from fibromyalgia and I’ve been reading that this piercing may help alleviate pain. At this point my pain has become so constant and severe I’m willing to try almost anything. If this piercing provides me pain relief I really won’t care if it’s work appropriate or not. In the courthouse where I work piercings are quite common. I suppose older judges might not be down with them but I’ve seen younger judges admiring them. Times are changing.

  18. Rhia says:

It’s pretty normal in DC, too. Tons of professional women have multiple ear piercings, and nostril piercings are pretty common. I worked for my current boss for three months before he even noticed my nose is pierced. I’ve had roommates and co-workers who see me nearly every day comment on my “new” piercings as well. I’ve concluded most people aren’t paying that much attention.

  19. MiChelle says:

I’m an economist for the federal government who has to meet with outside parties (mostly lawyers) occasionally. Two lobe piercings on each ear, and two cartilage on my left ear and one on the right. I keep it simple with a small silver hoop on the right and diamond studs on the left cartilage piercings. My second ear lobe piercings are always small diamond studs and I mix up the lower one only. I’m adding a tragus piercing on my left ear soon. I’m more worried about dying my hair (silver) than any of my ear piercings!

  20. C says:

Really not a fan of pain… when I got one ear pierced I was ready to not have the other ear pierced and claimed I would “be a pirate.” My mom made me get the other ear pierced though! So no multiples for me, but I wear ear cuffs. I work in defense. I figure, they know I’m a civilian when they hire me.

  21. Kate says:

I have 4 piercings on each ear & rock 7 earring regularly. Both ears have the standard + second hole. Left: 2 very close piercings high up on the cartilage. Right: a mid-point cartilage + my most recent / daring: a slightly higher anti-traugus. Maria Tash is the best – for all of my “non-standard” piercings, I wear her pieces only. They are teeny tiny options & threaded in the back (not really meant to be changed out often). The anti-traugus is a tiny rose gold MT hoop – it’s definitely my most daring, but it feels restrained with the jewelry choice. I tend not to wear anything on my 2nd lobe hole on the anti-traugus side because it looks a little too busy for my taste. I LOVE piercings because if the trend wears off, you can just take them out 🙂 One of my high-up cartilage piercings was from high school – I stopped wearing for + a decade then brought it back in recent years. Maybe the holes are always visible, but I imagine so much less regret than with a tat.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
