The Commute: No. 8

Jan 23, 2018

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Magic or Manic Monday? Can you improve your whole week by refusing to schedule meetings on Monday? It sounds amazing in theory, but I don’t how you could make it work in a busy office. Maybe just Magic Monday Mornings?

Office Pool. This navy Maggy London dress has a playfulness to it while still being perfect for work.

Un-Disciplined. You could say I lack discipline. I just say that I’ve never found anything habit-forming.  But to make a new habit stick–working out, getting up early, etc.–you have to know what motivates you.

Divided in Half. Ann Taylor has 50% off full-price tops and sweaters with code TOPITOFF.  My winter-to-spring picks?  This multi-color striped top.  This all-season poplin blouse.  This rosy tie-sleeve sweater.

Notorious. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says #metoo and more stories from America’s foremost octogenarian badass.

Parseltongue. J.Crew has the perfect snakeskin pumps.  Get ’em while they’re hot.  Or wait ’til they’re on sale.  Need flats?  These ASOS flats (also in wide) are amazingly priced at $23.

What You Must Watch. Saru Jayaraman discussing how tipping reinforces a culture of harassment and poverty of restaurant workers.  More in this NYT article.

To Buy or Not to Buy. This $90 faux-fur collar wrap coat. I envision it with ivory pants and an ivory sweater.  Maybe I’ll just stick to this simple Ted Baker camel wrap coat instead.

Last Best Place. Apparently, they couldn’t find a single Montanan who would describe Big Sky Country as the “worst” place to live.  Not shocking.

What I Wish I Was Baking. Kyle hates chocolate cake.  Such a shame.  This Martha Stewart one-bowl cake looks incredible.

What I’m Listening To. Lots of Mat Kearney.

What I’m Gifting. I needed a gift for a friend’s house warming and she loves to bake.  Voila!  Custom face cookie cutters.  Now, her cookies look like her family.

I’m actually in an office space right now where we start the week with team meetings on Mondays, mid-morning. And I actually really like it…I was expecting not to. I feel unrushed when I’m getting into work, and like I can process what I need to do, because I will have time to talk through these items and schedules with my small team before starting anything big. We have cushion time before and after to get settled and oriented, but I’m amazed how much I like spending 60-75 minutes working in my team for the week (and then not really again!)

As long as it’s not first thing, I think they could work. We did a 1pm staff meeting on Mondays, and that worked. But 9am? No, just no.

      • Pompom says:

Oh heck no. Nothing first thing, ever. With an 830 day start, we don’t start meetings until 10. Done by 11:15ish.

  2. Madeline says:

I LOVE MAT KEARNEY! I’ve seen him live and he’s even more incredible in person (and his band was fun too).

  3. M says:

Bold hooks this week are on point! Parseltongue made me smile

  4. Jen says:

“angles don’t read terribly well from a cookie standpoint” LOL, that made me chuckle! I’m going to bookmark this etsy page for future gifts… I also must have this Maggy London dress. Any tips on styling for the office? Would you wear a blazer with it? PS I love me some RBG, she’s my hero

  5. Alex says:

I have the ASOS snakeskin flats and LOVE them. They don’t look or feel like they cost $23. I walk all over in them and they’re so comfortable and have held up really well- no obvious signs of wear. They’re a great neutral pair of shoes that have complimented so many outfits. I plan to buy more of this style in other colors. Highly, HIGHLY recommend them.

The Beauty Edit: An Under-Eye Concealer That Actually Works

My dark under eye circles have been the bane of my existence since I was 12. Is the cause lack of sleep? Dehydration? Sinus issues? Stress? Who the hell knows. But there they are, every day, telling the world that I am an exhausted working Mom.

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
