Ask the Edit: Vol. V, No. 3

Jan 23, 2018

Today, we’re talking work blazers, elopement dresses, eyeliner and more.  Because it’s Tuesday, and we all need a little fashion and beauty break.

Abra,

What does a girl have to do to find a couple of good work blazers that aren’t going to cost me my whole paycheck?  I need three (possibly four) blazers in neutral colors (but maybe not boring) that are priced in the $150 or lower range.  If I have to wear my Club Monaco black blazer again, I’m going to toss it in the Reflecting Pool.

Just Bored

Oh honey.  I’ve been there.  Let me suggest a few blazers and jackets to help you out.

I’m a fan of tweed blazers.  This navy raw edge jacket from Halogen is really cool.  This sequin J.Crew tweed is also a unique option.

I always like a white blazer.  It’s so fresh looking.  This Mural Boyfriend Blazer is a popular choice.  I also like this Catherine Malandrino fringe blazer for $36.  Vince Camuto also has this white blazer with a slightly more modern shape.  Plus-size?  This one-button Vince Camuto is cool.

Belted blazers are also having a moment.  This olive blazer is just $21 (try it with ivory separates).  This NYDJ black belted blazer would be my pick.

Dear Abra,

Do you have a favorite drugstore eyeliner?  That Tom Ford you love cost as much as my food budget for the week.  I don’t need the perfect flick that bad.

Leslie

I’m actually off the Tom Ford myself.  The cap came off two successive pens while traveling and the tips dried out in flight.  Once you realize that you can lose $50 that quickly, you switch.

I’m using the Sephora long-wear liner.  It’s fine, drips a bit out of the tube, which isn’t ideal.  When it runs out, I’ll probably switch to the Gigi Hadid liner everyone is raving about or the L’Oreal Infallible I used to use.

Abra,

My sister’s birthday is next week.  I want a simple necklace with a simple pendant.  Short, not long.  Easier said than done.  Everything is either too expensive or overly detailed.  I went into a store yesterday and thought, “Maybe Belle can help me.”  So this is my last resort.  My budget is $200.  Help me, please.

Lenna

It does not get simpler than this Gorjana power gems necklace.  A simple bead on a thin chain in gold or silver.  It’s affordable and sophisticated.

This Sabi Lariat is a wonderful, modern choice.  This Cloverpost necklace with a simple pearl pendant has a classic look.  I also love this tiny Alex Monroe feather pendant.

Hello Belle –

I’m seeking little white dress suggestions for an elopement. I’m looking for something timeless and classic that will look amazing. I’d like to keep it under $1,000. Bonus points for shoe recommendations, since you’ll actually see them with a short or midi length dress.

Thanks in advance. – Annie

So fun!  This would be easier if I knew you, but since I don’t, there are two categories for short wedding dresses — “classic and sleek” or “feminine and pretty.”

Classic. This off-the-shoulder Adler dress is phenomenal.  Black Halo’s Kiara sheath has a modern shape with a chic peplum.  I also like this strapless Halston Heritage dress.  But if I was going to pick a dress in this category, I would choose this Antonio Berardi flutter sleeve crepe dress.

Feminine. This Giambattista Valli dress just screams lace party dress.  This Tiana dress from BHLDN mixes lace and texture in a modern way.  For something really dramatic, try this Rime Arodaky dress.

Now, I know you said short or midi dress, but what about a long one?  Not a gown, but this incredibly ethereal, casual Alexis wrap dress.  It has such a glamorous, relaxed look.

Shoes obviously depend on the dress, so recommending blind isn’t a great plan.  But if you’re looking for a universal evening shoe, these Sophia Webster shoes are sublime.  As are these Alexander Birman sandals.  Need something under-$150, try these Brinley Heels.

Hi Abra,

Are the M.Gemi shoes really worth it?  I see you posting about them, and I want their Stellatto flats, but I’m hesitant.  What say you?

M.C.

I have four pairs of shoes from M.Gemi, and I wish I had more.  They wear well, are fairly comfortable, and are always stylish.  I’ve tried a lot of brands over the years, from the pricey to the bargain-priced.  M.Gemi is the only brand I own more than one pair of.

The necklace request sounds right up my alley! I love an understated, chic necklace. One I’ve been eyeing:

Oh my, that Adler dress is so gorgeous!

My necklace suggestion – https://m.tiffany.com/jewelry/necklaces-pendants/elsa-peretti-teardrop-pendant-28827687. I bought this necklace for myself 15 years ago and it still looks as beautiful and timeless as it did when I got it. One of my favorites!

I’ve looked for a long time for a good eyeliner. Best one hands down is the Koji Dolly Wink eyeliner you can order from Amazon for $12! Applies well, doesn’t smudge, stays all day.

The necklaces at Mejuri are also simple and gorgeous. I have some of their not charms in gold, which are a little out of budget, but they have really nice gold vermeil and silver options:

Those Alexandre Birman sandals are everything…

I actually picked up the Physician’s Formula Eye Boost eyeliner on Belle’s recommendation (from this post: https://theworkedit.com/capitol/2017/05/18/beauty-review-this-12-eyeliner-is-a-dream.html) and have been using it ever since. I can’t attest to the lash growth claims, but as an eyeliner it stays put – and I like the pen tip.

I can’t find that one in the stores here. But it was a good one. I totally spaced on it.

I also bought that from Amazon on Belle’s recommendation and have been really happy with it! It started me wearing eyeliner daily which I never managed before.

I love that Loreal super slim eyeliner. It’s also much much much cheaper if you order it on Target’s website and have a Redcard. I think it’s like $6 there?

  8. Annie says:

Thank you! I really like the Antonio Berardi and the Birman shoes. Net-a-porter here I come…

  9. Amy says:

Which M Gemi’s do you have and love? I have a pair of the Felize and am looking to add to my collection…

    Hi Abra!

I have an an engagement shoot coming up in early April at Santa Monica Pier. It’s beachy but am going back and forth on what kind of dress to wear – casual or dressy, long/midi/short. Aaaack! I feel there’s so much pressure for these “forever photos.” Do you have any suggestions?

    LOVE your site and Insta!

Whatever you wear most often that reflects this time in your lives. So if you’re sweater and jeans people or summer dress people or cocktail people, go with what feels natural. Just don’t wear busy prints, they don’t usually photo well. Also, focus on your makeup and hair. You want to see you, not the clothes.
