2017 Holiday Gift Guide: For the Career Woman

Nov 29, 2017

When I was thinking about a gift guide for career women, I started thinking about objects that are utilitarian, but also a bit luxurious.  The kind of gifts that make everyday life just a bit more glamorous.

One. Demi-fine Jewelry.  Between the affordable wares at Baublebar and the sumptuous diamonds at David Yurman is a category of jewelry called demi-fine.  These are pieces that you can wear every day, but were also a bit of a splurge.

Monica Vinader is the perfect designer for that.  Her pieces are gorgeous, yet wearable.  Other brands for this include Adina Reyter and EF Collection.

Baja Gold Cuff ($295) // Monica Vinader Gold Mid-Band ($150) // Initial Charm ($117)

Two. A Business Card Holder.  Unless you’re wearing a suit jacket, there is no good way to transport business cards.  You wind up either digging in your purse or holding a pile in your hand all night.  Not great.  But this card case from Kate Spade is genius because it adheres to the back of your cell phone.  Problem solved.

Three. Neutral Polishes.  When you work in a conservative office, there are so many rules.  For many of us, painting our nails a bright pink or a dark navy is just out of the question (except on vacay).  This polish set from Deborah Lippmann gives you all the office-pink shades you need with a few fun, but still understated, extras.

Four. A Desk Calendar.  Desk calendars are great because they allow you to add a bit of color and life to your desk with a utilitarian object.  This marriage of usefulness and pretty makes a calendar the best way to personalize your space without overdoing it.

Artifact Uprising created this chic desk calendar that lets you personalize each month with your own photos.  I chose a dozen of my favorite shots of Montana, but you could use pictures of your friends, your kids, or your travels.

Brass Easel Desk Calendar ($55) // Rifle Paper Co. Calendar ($18) // Marley Desk Calendar ($18)

Five. A Chic Charging Dock.  My house is covered in iPhone chargers.  Between K and I, we own six and they’re all plugged in (usually with 6ft cables), at all times.  It’s unsightly.  This year, I’m buying us both charging docks that double as home decor.

Native Union Charging Dock ($59) // Pottery Barn Wireless Chargind Box ($119)

Six. Pearl Earrings. I’m not a preppy chick, but I do love a nice set of pearl earrings.  They’re dainty and pretty, and when you wear them with white, they bring a brightness to your face.  Whether you choose an expensive pair of Mikimotos or a cultured set from Majorica, you’ll wear them more often than you imagined.

Majorica Clustered Pearls ($85) // Blanca Gomez Cultured Pearls ($100)

Seven. A Keychain. Keychains are the accessory most women overlook, but they’re easy to upgrade.  I love this orbit keychain because it allows me to tuck away keys I need but don’t use every day.  It also has a nice mix of sleekness and simplicity.  Whether you choose a designer chain or a simple tassel, a new key chain is a fun accessory that brings a little glam to your life.

Orbit 2.0 Key Ring ($44) // Gucci Key Ring ($200) // iPhone Charger Key Ring ($14)

Does the Orbit keychain hold larger car keys that have the remote in the fob? It doesn’t look like they would fit, but I love the keychain otherwise!

    Hi Belle,

Do you know how well the Kate Spade pocket un-adheres and re-adheres? My BFF is a doctor. I think she would love the phone pocket for conferences, but she doesn’t need it day to day.

    • Belle says:

I’d probably just buy two cases, one with, one without. But I don’t know about the adhering strength, I checked the Kate Spade website, none of the reviews said.

    • C says:

I have a Kate Spade pocket on my phone. Once it’s adhered, I don’t think it would work to remove it and then re-apply it later. It might be possible once (with a lot care in protecting the adhesive), but I’d be really nervous that it wouldn’t still as well after being re-applied and it could fall off without you noticing.

    • Anna says:

The website says it’s one time use. I bought one from Bed Bath and Beyond a while back that was reusable, though definitely not as cute. It actually nearly replaced my wallet. I always have my phone on hand, so using it for my id, metro card, and everyday credit card meant one less thing to stick in my coat pocket or carry on a cafeteria run, and I ended up almost never using my actual wallet. I’ve definitely missed having it since I changed my phone, so I’m seriously tempted to upgrade to the Kate Spade one.

  3. Jennifer says:

Everyone seems to be criticizing J.Crew lately, but they have come out with a line of demi-fine jewelry, with pieces ranging from $50 to just under $100. They are “everyday wearable” with classic and modern designs. I like the “paper clip” earrings, bracelet, and necklace.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
