Navy Coach Mercer Satchel // Ralph Lauren Tate Satchel // Hilfiger Convertible Tote

Red Annabel Ingall Tote // Vince Camuto Leila Tote // Forever 21 Tote

Grey Skagen Denmark Handle Satchel // Matt & Nat Tamsin Bag (vegan) // NM Leather Wing Bag

Black handbags are a chic basic, but I hate carrying them on sunny days.  They feel too heavy and dark.  I much prefer to carry lighter neutrals or bright colors.  Here are the three basic shades–navy, red, grey–that form the foundation of my spring handbag wardrobe.

Each color features a selection of bags in multiple price points.  When examining a less expensive bag, inspect the stitching and the quality of bindings, buckles and liners.  That’s how you know whether you’re getting a good deal or cheap thrill.

What are your favorite handbags for spring?  In addition to these shades, I always like cognac, embossed snakeskin, and vibrant green.

Say what you will about Tommy Hilfiger but his bags hold up well. I have one of his bags that’s about 4-5 years old and it’s held up better than my Kate Spade or Tory Burch bags of the same age and material.

Also? I’m totally tired of Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Tory Burch.

    Love this layout!

  3. Anna says:

Have you seen Claire Underwood’s brown top-handle satchel in the first few episodes of the new season of House of Cards? Since Claire is carrying it, I’m sure it’s way out of my price range, but I’d love to ID it regardless.

  4. HH says:

I echo Sarah’s comment – I love this layout, too.

Has anyone bought a Skagen bag? I’ve been eyeing their bags online, but am not familiar with how well they hold up.

  5. Jess says:

Nearly all of these have zippers in the top–any suggestions for bags without that?

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
