Style Translator: Understated Winter Neutrals

I am utterly taken with pale neutral outfits made up of classic pieces.  How taken, you ask?  Utterly besotted.  I posted the image above from Death by Elocution.  I also posted this image of With Love From Kat.  And this image from Peony Lim with a chunky ivory sweater instead of a coat.  Plus about a half-dozen more…yes, it’s becoming a problem.

My attraction to the outfits begins with the Neutral Color Palette.  In a sea of winter black, it’s so refreshing to see pale neutrals.  It feels so crisp and modern, and yet undeniably feminine.  Perhaps it’s the lingering Olivia Pope effect.

There is nothing I love more in cold weather than A Gorgeous Coat with clean lines.  This Daylina coat from Club Monaco fits the bill.  For something in the $100-range, Misguided has several options including this oversized camel coat and this belted brushed camel coat.  Plus-size? This Studio tie neck fit coat is pure fabulousness.

Simple Sweaters are a winter must-have for me.  I need pale grey, like this Equipment Asher cashmere sweater.  I need basic black.  I need at least one bright color, like this INC sweater.  These “basics” if made-well and fitted appropriately go beyond the standard into the sublime.  For cotton sweaters, I choose Everlane. To baby your knits, you need Eucalan fine fabric wash.

A few years ago, everyone was into statement pieces — necklaces, bracelets, earrings — the bigger, the better.  But now, I am into Sleek Accessories with a clean look and simple elegance.  They make an impact specifically because they whisper instead of scream.  This Philip Stein watch is the perfect option, but if it is too rich for your blood, this Coach Thompson watch, with a double band, is awesome.

Lastly, alterations and fit really matter.  So if your clothes are a bit baggy, Get It Tailored.  A trip to the tailor is a guarantee that you’ll feel good about how your clothes look and feel.

  1. I especially love a good camel topper coat. My favourite is from Smythe Les Vestes.. I have it on my Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/p/_mQ5NZvTGR/

has anyone had a bad experience with the tailor taking in their suit or blazer in from the sides/waist? about to get my blazer taken in, but i’ve heard it’s a difficult alteration and i’m scared of the risk.

It’s not an easy alteration. My advice, always leave a hair more room than you think you need. One, you might gain weight or wear a thicker shirt. Two, the tailor might cut it a bit too close.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
