BPGP: Phillips Sonicare DiamondClean

May 7, 2015

Snip20150506_4Like many adults, my gums are receding.  My dentist recommended switching to an electric toothbrush.  I asked for reader recommendations and several people steered me towards the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Toothbrush ($189).

The toothbrush has five modes, Clean, White, Polish, Sensitive, and Gum Care.  The toothbrush has a timer that chimes every 30-seconds, so that you know when to move from one quadrant of your mouth to another.  It also assures that you brush for the full 2-minutes recommended by dentists.

After using the toothbrush for a week, my teeth have never been cleaner.  The first time I used the toothbrush, it felt like I’d been to the dentist.  The difference was a bit mind blowing.  My teeth are also noticeably whiter than they were before.

The only drawback is the price.  Paying $200 for a toothbrush didn’t please me.  I was willing to do it, because due to some childhood health issues, I have one year of law school tuition sunk into my smile.  Protecting the health of my teeth and gums into later life is my paramount concern.

If the price also gives you the chills, the folks at The Sweethome reviewed several brands of electric toothbrush and pronounced the $50 Philips Sonicare 2 to be just as effective as the DiamondClean, but with fewer bells and whistles.

Making the jump to an electric toothbrush exceeded my expectations.  My teeth are cleaner, whiter, and healthier.  So if you are still using a manual toothbrush, an electric might be worth a try.

Sonicare is AMAZING. I used to get that comment at the dentist “you should really floss more!” and about 3 weeks prior to my last appointment I bought a Sonicare and I got RAVE reviews from my Dentist about my oral health. Woooop! worth every penny.

  2. Mel A. says:

I love my $50 Sonicare. I don’t think I could go back to any other toothbrush now. The only problem is the lifespan of the product, even for the more expensive versions. Recycling these is difficult and so wasteful to put them into the trash. I’ve had to replace mine three times over the last two years; twice when the battery refused to charge anymore, and once when the toothbrush wouldn’t turn off. It buzzed nonstop for three days before I finally had to throw it away due to the constant loud noise.

  3. April says:

So happy you switched! As a Dentist, I am a firm believer in this toothbrush. Remember you CAN do damage with this toothbrush just like a manual brush. You want a light grasp and don’t push too hard. Let the toothbrush do the work!!!!

If you have a Costco membership, I highly recommend finding a friend who also is looking to make the switch to an electric toothbrush and buying their dual pack: https://www.costco.com/Philips-Sonicare-Flexcare-Rechargeable-Sonic-Toothbrush-Premium-Edition-2-pk.product.100071852.html

My old Sonicare bit the dust after about 5 years of continued use, so I picked up the dual pack at Costco (which on its own is already less than buying a single set elsewhere) and split the cost with a friend — the only downside is that the dual pack only comes with one travel charger and one sanitizing charger, but since I already had both from my old Sonicare, it worked to give them both to my friend.

Costco is also a great place to pick up replacement brushheads — I’ve found a six pack at Costco is usually around the same price as a three pack at Target.

  5. Abigail says:

I bought this toothbrush in 2011, and have never regretted it. It may cost $200, but it is well worth the price, and you can lessen the sticker shock of replacement heads through bulk purchases on amazon.

  6. Mica says:

I got one as a gift and loved it. It died shortly after the 2 yr warranty was up and I can’t bring myself to purchase another. I’m back to manual and my dentist hasn’t noticed.

  7. Kathy says:

So happy you got this instead of the foreo Issa one, which is NOT approved by the American dental association! Leave the tooth brushing to the experts!

  8. Jess says:

I think I was one of the ones that recommended this brush. I just had my first cleaning since getting it (I’ve had it since 10/2014) and it was immediately noticed by my hygienist and dentist that my teeth were cleaner, I had less tartar buildup and my gum tissue looked much healthier. Well worth the $$ to me. I picked up a 6 pack of heads at Costco back in November, so I figure I should be set for a while. From what I have read, Sonicare stands behind their warranty, so it’s worth contacting them if you run into issues.

  9. Jacob says:

I personally own the Sonicare Diamondclean and love it. Makes my mouth feel like I’ve just had a professional cleaning after every time I brush my teeth. The Phillips Sonicare Diamondclean is one of the best toothbrushes on the market. Using an electric toothbrush compared to a manual one is night and day. There are so many different electric toothbrushes to choose from tho more info on some of the top ones ( http://www.pickmyelectrictoothbrush.com/ ). The thing that seperates each one is price, different features, and modes. I recommend getting one tho.
