Ask Belle: Bathrobes, Both Cozy and Sleek

Feb 3, 2015

Dear Belle,

I’ve searched on your site for advice regarding a high quality bath robe but didn’t find anything.  I’m thinking of a gift for myself and perhaps a lucky friend this Valentine’s Day but it’s hard to figure out what is actually decent quality online.  The best I found are actually at Pottery Barn (with monogram too!).

Do you have other, better options to suggest?  Thanks and hope you’re staying warm out there! Lisa

Before you buy a bathrobe, you need to ask one question: Do I want a cozy, fluffy robe or something sleeker for covering up?

Pique Kimono Bathrobe ($99)

For every day wear, I own this Hotel Collection bathrobe.  It’s the right mix of soft and functional.  Looking for something cozier?  They also make a velour bathrobe.

A number of my friends speak fondly of the Barefoot Dreams robes. Their blankets might be the softest thing on Earth, so I expect the same of their robes.

Calvin Klein Essentials Robe ($75)

For something sleeker, I like a short robe.  It’s also better for travel, just roll it up and toss it in your bag.  I like this charcoal grey robe from Calvin Klein.  This DKNY Essential robe is another great choice; it also comes in plus-size.

Looking for something sultrier?  I recommend silk.  This Soma Intimates robe would be my first choice.

I got the Pottery Barn Luxe Cozy robe for Christmas and I LOVE it. It’s so soft and warm. The sleeves are super long and it comes almost to my ankles (I’m 5’3″) which I didn’t originally want. But I’m very happy with it now. I was specifically looking for a monogrammed robe and they were hard to find in a winter weight

I bought the Natori Nirvana robe from Nordstrom at the beginning of the winter and it’s the perfect weight for mild California winters; in the Northeast I’d still wear it in 3 seasons, and in winter if I kept the house toasty. The fit in size XS is perfect for petites, knee-length with cropped sleeves that are regular-length on me. Never before have I owned a robe that I didn’t have to roll the sleeves on.

I got a divine full length heavy terry robe from Lands End. They monogram as well. It is fabulous.

Restoration Hardware has the best robes if you’re looking for something other than slinky.

I have this one and I am utterly obsessed

I have been searching high and low for a replacement for my Tommy Hilfiger robe – who knew it would be so difficult? Thank you for this round up, I might be putting a bug in my fiance’s ear for v-day 🙂

I have a gorgeous purple fleece robe from LL Bean. It’s long and lush, and I purchased a medium even though I size small because I wanted it to be roomy and snuggly. I live in an old house in New England and it is absolutely frigid here for more than half of the year.

I also have a lovely lavender cotton robe that I purchased from one of the department stores when I was pregnant. It’s light enough to wear in the spring and summer – I pack it away with my off-season clothes. While I have a few silk robes, as a mom of 2, I don’t wear them much. I have a simple jersey short robe to take on trips. My view of bathrobes is they ought to protect you from embarrassment when the UPS guy shows up early Saturday morning.
