BPGP: Aveda Damage Remedy Treatment

Jan 29, 2015

After a winter in the dry Western air, my hair was a bit fried.  The ends were flyaway.  The color dull.  It would barely hold a curl.

130952d14859b859227e38df5d591f4cI skipped washings.  I stopped using dry shampoo.  I slathered on olive oil.  Nothing worked.

Finally, I dropped into my local Aveda shop to see if they had something stronger than my usual Aussie 3-Minute Miracle.  After some shelf searching, I decided on their Damage Remedy Treatment ($22).

After I used it, I finished styling my hair and was disappointed to discover no change.  Hair = straw-like.  I was not amused.  I resolved to return the product the next day.  But then a funny thing happened.

The next morning, I washed and conditioned my hair using Pureology Hydrate.  My hair was definitely shinier, and softer than normal.  It was even better the next day.  By the third day, people were asking if I’d had a haircut or done something different with my hair.

Moral of the story, the Aveda Damage Treatment works.  I probably didn’t see the results the first day because I used a clarifying shampoo to remove the remnants of the olive oil from the day before.  Once I switched back to my regular shampoo and conditioner, the improvement was noticeable.  My hair is shinier, smoother, and much more manageable.

Belle, I’m trying to find a shampoo that both hydrates my hair but doesn’t give me acne on my chest/back. (Organic shampoos dry my hair out, old non-natural favorites make me break out.) Knowing that you struggle with acne, how do you think the Pureology does?

    • Belle says:

It gives me acne. If you find something, let me know.

Are you sure it is the shampoo? I have found relief by pulling my hair off my back with a hair tie while I let the conditioner sit in it. I love my Pureology and have had bumps appear on my back, but only when I don’t pull my hair off of it when I condition.

Seconded! I have “unfortunate Catholic hair” and just started using this product. It does wonders, and I think it’s particularly effective prior to heat styling.

  3. Liz says:

I use the Daily Hair Repair in the Aveda Damage Remedy collection. I use it as a leave in conditioner if I am going to be doing anything other than putting my hair in a damp french braid and I have noticed a HUGE change in my hair. The ends stay so much more beautiful when I blow dry, curl, etc.!

  4. Bunny says:

I was having horrible breakage, dryness, and split end issues about a year ago and I started using, of all things, Tresemme Anti-Breakage shampoo and conditioner. It worked wonders for my hair. It isn’t a treatment product like the Aveda above, but it is a good every day option as well as being super budget friendly.

  5. Phoebe says:

You read my mind…I need something to work a miracle. I have never had so many split ends form so quickly in my hair (I have been getting regular trims, too).

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
