BR Marled Sweater Dress ($150)

Banana Republic is becoming my go-to place for chic casual and work clothes.  This marled sweater is perfectly chunky.  I also like this textured shirttail dress with black tights and boots.  And this fit-and-flare dress is a versatile choice.

If it’s been a while since you’ve shopped at Banana, start with their sweaters.  I like this chunky, ivory pullover and this horizontal stitch sweater in a gorgeous grey hue.  Their shoes are also worth a look.  I own these Ninah pumps in two colors, and I love them.

Also, if you head over there, and there isn’t a discount available, just wait until tomorrow.  No need to pay full price when a discount code is almost guaranteed to arrive in a day or two.

This is a great dress. It certainly makes me think again about shopping at BR, who I’ve usually ruled out.

  2. KC says:

I was really excited about this dress when I first saw it, but the reviews of this one (and a couple other sweater dresses I was eyeing) were that it was so inappropriately short that it was only wearable as a tunic for anyone over 5’6″.

  3. LeslieJeannene says:

My biggest issue with BR is that 90% of the time the things I want are a “BR Pick” and the discount code doesn’t apply. Drives me nuts. Its still my go to for work clothes though.

    • Belle says:

That is maddening. Someone told me if you have the BR card it negates BR Picks, but I don’t know.

      • KF says:

I have a BR card. Unfortunately, the “BR Picks” are still excluded.

        • Belle says:

Damn. Is it different in store? I’m not trying to be argumentative, I just remember going into the store in DC back in Sept. and I wanted a dress that was from a specialty line and the clerk told me it was 30% off with card. Maybe that just wasn’t an every day thing? Regardless, I guess all the caveats make the sale a little ridiculous to navigate.

          • KF says:

I have never tried to buy a BR Pick with the card in-store, so maybe it is different (or the clerks are just less able to apply it consistently than the automated system in the online store is!). It may be worth the trip to the store if that’s the case.

  4. Liz says:

Belle (and any readers still in school), BR gives a student discount! I believe it’s 15% just show your school ID at checkout. I think it even applies to pieces that are “BR Pick”

  5. AJNE says:

I loved BR but hate their rebranding and the new direction they’re going in. Classic pieces have gone out the window in favor of pieces that are ill-fitting and trendy.

    • Belle says:

I do agree it would be nice if when mid-price brands go modern, they’d keep a basics section that stayed the same. That’s the foundation of their brand anyway.

  6. Linsey says:

    This.

After a two year break from Corporate America to earn my MBA, I have relied on Banana Republic almost exclusively since I graduated in May. Their dresses have been perfect; great fitting, good fabrics and have a nice selection of “tall” sizes (I am 5’10). I have received so many compliments on my BR garments.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
