Belle’s Weekly Reading: October 10, 2014

1) Always on the search for new reading material (though less so since law school took all my free time hostage), I love Flavorwire’s piece where 50 cultural icons from Caroline Kennedy to Lil’ Jon share their favorite books.

2) These Jemma Wynn earrings are incredible, but so is the price.  BaubleBar offers an earring in a similar style for $28.  I also like these cuff earrings from Sole Society.

3) A DEA agent used a woman’s name, likeness and biographical information to set up a phony Facebook page so he could communicate with drug dealers online.  He also used photos of her children, all of which were taken from her seized cell phone.

4) Could this neon-pink striped Crewcuts overnight bag be the perfect gym bag?  (Also in navy.)

5) Madewell touts itself as an all-American company founded in 1937, but the current company has no ties to the original Madewell brand.  It’s a great article about how legacy brands are hot commodities.

6) The Neiman Marcus Christmas Book is always entertaining.  This year’s “fantasy gifts” include a $65,000 peacock floral sculpture and a $425,000 Vanity Fair Academy Awards Experience.

7) Taco Bell is opening an upscale version called U.S. Taco Co.  It’s everything I never knew I always wanted.

8) The Outnet does it again.  (Well, the new arrivals do it every week.)  This pale pink Theory top is sublime.  I also like this shell-striped cashmere sweater from DvF.

9) This infographic on how to store groceries for maximum shelf life contains some good information.

10) Has anyone every tried C.O. Bigelow’s Cold & Flu Soak?  I’m intrigued, it looks kind of like Vicks Vapo-Rub that you bathe in.

11) The case of Brad Bishop, a former State Dept. employee who murdered his family in 1976 before going on the run, is one of the D.C. area’s most enduring mysteries.  The Washington Post has a story about recent developments that suggest he may have died penniless in Alabama a few years ago.

12) Anthropologie has the cutest 2015 calendars right now.  I bought the Garance Dore calendar filled with her fab sketches.  I also like their artsy travel calendar.

Hi Belle, awhile back you posted in one of these round-ups a print of DC from Etsy. Do you have that link by any chance? The search feature isn’t turning anything up for me.

  2. Betsy says:

I love the list of celebrities favorite books! Thank you! I am oddly gratified that Amy Poehler and I share the same favorite book.

Also: am ordering those CrewCuts bags for my kids. Love! Thank you for the reminder to check out that site more often when cruising J Crew.

  3. Monica says:

Love that article about the Madewell brand, great read, and a great take on modern consumerism.

Also, can’t believe the DEA was able to do that. Pretty shocking that it is within their rights to use the identity of a REAL person without their permission.

  4. Nancy says:

The Bigelow soak looks great. You can get pretty similar results from a bottle of eucalyptus oil–or peppermint, as they do. Just splashing some on your shower floor and steaming it up is very soothing when you’re congested.

  5. Joules says:

Great tips on food storage! I’m always sort of wondering if things are still good when I discover something in the fridge that looks ok but might not be. Generally I throw it out, but this will help me figure out if I can use it or not.

The Bigelow soak is amazing and well-worth every penny. It helps with the aches and pains of a cold/flu and opens up your sinuses. A little goes a long way too – I used maybe a quarter of the bottle after a rough cold/flu season.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
