Mid Rise Wide Leg Pant ($70, also in tall and short lengths)

Fashion goes in waves.  Fifteen years ago, no woman would be caught dead in skinny jeans, now they’re all you can buy.  This year, wide leg trousers are making a comeback.

These Express trousers are a great place to start.  I like the mid-rise for proportion.  These Oasis trousers look like they have the sleek fit typical of UK-brands.  These Mango trousers are almost egregiously wide, so if you want to channel your inner Rachel Zoe, these are it.  But my favorite pair are these $39 H&M trousers that come in black or off-white.

Plus-size?  These Michael Kors pants look like a great choice.  Petite? These Elementz pants have a wide look without being too voluminous.

The secret to finding wide leg trousers that fit is tailoring.  Oh, you knew I was going to say that didn’t you.

If you’re pear-shaped, buy them to fit your hips and tush and then have the waist taken in.  If you carry your weight in your stomach, buy them bigger in the waist and then tailor the rest.  I usually need to narrow the pants in the leg by having the outer seam taken in.  This alteration costs about $25 and keeps the pants from looking too big, because proportion is everything when wearing wide leg pants.

Belle, normally I am so on-board with your plus size suggestions, but the Michael Kors pants are glorified sweatpants! As an alternative, may I suggest a wide leg trouser from a plus size specialty shop that has really been delivering on stylish, well-proportioned pieces for my fellow curvy girls? From Eloquii: https://www.eloquii.com/wideleg-trouser/1170040.html?ppid=c20&start=20&cgid=pants&dwvar_1170040_colorCode=100

And if you have a bit more in your budget, from Mynt 1792: https://mynt1792.com/collections/pants/products/wide-leg-trouser

“Proportion is everything in wide leg pants”. No truer words spoken with this comeback.

  3. Helena says:

    Hallelujah!

  4. Kate says:

For more plus size options, check out the wide leg trousers at Talbots. They are more tailored than the Michael Kors pants.

  5. I (and my thighs) are ridiculously excited about this! Those pants look great, and wide-leg look so much better on pear shapes than skinny pants.

  6. Erin says:

If you can do a post on how to style/wear these, that would be awesome.

    • Wren says:

Seconded! It has been a long time since I’ve broken out my trouser-style pants and I can’t remember anything beyond the basic tucked-in button-up.
