10th Commandment: July 22

Jul 22, 2014

Who doesn’t get excited about inexpensive work basics?  This week, the morning post will feature work basics with under-$100 prices.

rsz_screen_shot_2014-07-20_at_73629_pmHalogen Suiting Basics in Regular and Petite (Pants, $58; Jacket, $99; Skirt, $46)

I tried on a few things at the Anniversary Sale this weekend.  These suiting pieces are a great buy at this price.  The quality is as good or slightly better than Banana Republic’s pieces.

Halogen also makes a suit in a brown weave (blazer and skirt).  They also make a basic black suit (blazer and skirt).

Also, if you missed the Halogen seamed pencil skirt that I mentioned in Friday’s post, it’s definitely worth a look.  I bought it in the berry and the teal.  A very well-made item for $46.

Plus-size? I would look at Macy’s first.  They have a good selection of suit pieces from various brands that fall in the under-$100 price range thanks to the sale.

What’s the length like on the Halogen skirt (I loved the berry and the camel), but I usually buy Banana skirts in tall since I’m 5’11” and don’t like pencil skirts to be too short for work. Thanks!

    • JMW says:

I found the length to be long. I am 5’3″ and had to buy petite. IMO you would be OK with a regular!

    • Christine says:

Nordstrom usually includes measurements so I checked when I was ordering earlier. This Halogen skirt says it is 25 1/2″ in regular sizes (which is about the same as a BR tall in their lightweight wool skirts). This is longer than prior versions of some Halogen skirts that I have at home.

  2. CasperClone says:

It is an inch or two longer than the summer ones this year. I am 5’7″ with long legs, and I find it very work appropriate.

I purchased this suit over the weekend. Great buy.

  4. Michelle says:

I tried the camel and found it to be tragically unflattering. It was too thin/clingy despite having a fairly trim frame and normally buying all my clothes off the rack no problem. Of course it could also have been the awful lighting in these changing rooms. Might give the teal a try in a size up, but was really hoping for more.

    • Belle says:

I didn’t like the camel color at all. I bought my usual size, but it was a bit big in the waist. I found the cling-factor no worse than usual, but maybe that was because it was a bit big. I also thought the length was really good. I think I was just a hair above the knee on my 5’7″ but with slightly short legs frame.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
